That kind of response always makes me nervous because it tells that the kid has probably had zero safety instruction pertaining to guns... the mystery is still there.

Indeed, we actually had the same reaction from her boyfriend, but he HAS had experience with firearms.
This friend is very...erm...liberal, so wasn't too pleased. But we gave him all sorts of heck about not noticing for so long. :)

He had just spotted my hubby's 6" King Cobra on his hip...that had been exposed for over an hour.

People really just don't pay attention. :)
