Re: Reminds Me of Something Lawyer Cotton Said:

"DON'T LET YOUR MOUTH TURN A GOOD SHOOTING BAD."
Something else worth thinking about: People who go around saying things like, "I'm going to pop a cap on a scumbag," stand a good chance of saying that or worse while the recorder is running.

Regarding selfishness versus altruism, this is not a black-and-white issue.

I am not going to risk my life and fortune to recover $49 for a convenience store, and I am not going to take homeless drug addicts into my home, although we have plenty of room and food is cheap.

I do make charitable contributions (definitely not as much as I could if I dispensed with recreational activities), and I would intervene in some situations.

Each situation has unique circumstances and has to be judged accordingly.

Just out of curiosity, how is robbery different from theft legally?
Robbery is theft by the use or threat of force.

You didn't ask, but burglary is entering a building with the intent to commit a felony.

The law doesn't justify the use of deadly force to prevent theft or criminal mischief during the day time, but we have seen cases where grand juries returned a no bill on such actions.

If the grand jury does not return a true bill, the DA can take the case to the next grand jury that is seated.

... material stuff can be replaced by insurance.
My homeowners insurance has a deductible of 1% of the value of the real estate, which comes to about $1,300 in my case. Burglars could steal anything they could carry in their hands from my house, and the insurance would not pay a dime.

I agree with txinvestigator on the legality of this incident.

Furthermore, since most people who serve on grand juries have been the victim of some kind of crime, I doubt they would indict this guy, even in Harris County. Remember the CHL holder on the bus?
