Maryland is highly urban, that is, most of the population is in cities. Concentrated drug traffic and gangs thrive in cities.Rex B wrote:Even more interesting is Maryland at 4th place, despite having some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
If you look at the Uniform Crime Report that I mentioned above, South Carolina is similar.

I take this report with a grain of salt. They say they considered the rates of "murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft" equally. The Texas penal code does not contain either rape or motor vehicle theft. The corresponding crimes are sexual assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. It's a lot easier to be charged with one of those than with rape or theft.
If you look at the FBI uniform crime report for violent crimes, though, Texas is pretty bad.
