When I was in college back in the stone age, when there was a highly charged issue our profs would challenge us to go research the topic and take the emotion out of it. I think Charles Cook wrote about the "blood in the streets" claim and pretty much debunked it. http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/41 ... un-streets One would hope people in an institute of "higher learning" might be able to do a bit of research and dig up some fact prior to forming an opinion instead of forming an opinion then looking for the facts only if challenged.
That would be a vain hope. Look at global warming. Has academic rigor been the norm or the exception? Look at studies on the impact on children living in same-sex marriages. Has academic rigor been the exception or the norm? Look at studies on "gun violence". Has academic rigor been the norm or the exception? What about the Vietnam War history? Has academic rigor been the norm or the exception?

In issue after issue after issue many academics have proven themselves unable to be objective and dispassionate. Their liberal leanings have influenced them to the point that the results of their studies bear no relationship to reality.

This is not to say that this is the case with every academic. There are some academics who are excellent researchers and can separate their political leanings from their research. The problem is they are the exception, not the norm.

It used to be that the faculty were the schools and the fundamental governing body. However, the USDE, through requirements hoisted upon the recognized accreditors (to keep their USDE recognition), have placed levels upon levels of non-academic bureaucracy over the last 40 years.

While we, as a guild, are known for being leftists nuts, I can guarantee you that is not the case. It's just they are the loudest. There are plenty of gun loving profs out there. If faculty were still the primary governing body of colleges and universities, I can almost guarantee you that there would be very few GFZs on campuses.

There's actually a bit of a revival of Libertarian type thinking, at least in the non-economic areas, among academics in the US. We are quite alarmed at what is happening in the UK and Canada in terms of government censorship and speech as it has implications for our academic freedom (the freedom to pursue any line of inquiry regardless of where it may lead). It began, ironically, with Mr. Marxist, Noam Chomsky, himself in his protest of fellow academics being jailed in Europe for merely asking the question about the accuracy of Holocaust numbers. Many are now applying their newly acquired libertarianesque thinking to other areas such as self-defense. You won't find this published (as it would be academic suicide at this point), but I've found this in conversations with colleagues all around the country at symposia, society meetings, and other types of "tweed and bow tie" gatherings.
I assume you meant CAN second your lament.

It warms the cockles of my heart to read what you've written. I've been wondering for some time now where the champions of free speech were with all the speech codes and attempted suppression of speech going on these days, especially on college campuses. Maybe there's hope for us yet.

He was in Dallas today signing transportation bills that benefit north Dallas. I suspect he'll do a similar public signing of the gun bills, probably in Austin.

That taking out the amendments was done so they could check .
I don't think that is in the bill. AM I wrong..?
I know PBS doesn't believe in the Constitution.
The courts have ruled that a law enforcement officer must have an articulable suspicion to stop a citizen for questioning. Open carrying a firearm, when it's legal to do so, does not create an articulable suspicion. Therefore they must have something else (furtive movement, suspicious actions, angry outburst, etc.) to stop you and ask to see your license.

So PBS is wrong, as is most of the media most of the time. All the amendment did was put into law what is already law. Nothing more. Removing it doesn't change a thing. It was removed for political reasons.

Overthehill wrote:Just one question. If Federal law already prohibits stopping just to inquire for a liscense and both amendments simply restate federal law then why, except to kill open carry, did some in the law enforcement community raise such a stink and why did the representatives roll over and vote not to concur. If law enforcement is truly prohibited from committing an act why was reinforcement of that prohibition an issue of such import? Or is the federal prohibition not factual? Simply seeking greater knowledge.
You answered your own question. "to kill open carry"

"Honorable sir,

The military has been family in one way or another for about half my life, so your background assures my continued support of you, but I would ask that you please not allow others to penalize supporters of HB910 for the sins of certain Democrats (Dutton & Huffines).

You changed your previous yes vote to a no tonight. That puts HB910 in jeopardy, effectively allowing the feelings of 79,000 law enforcement officers to deny reduced 30.06 penaties and licensed open carry for 825,000 law abiding citizens of Texas. While I am sure that you have many eloquent words that you can tell me, let me assure you that like a guy named Paul from an old Good Book, I am observant of actions, not pretty words.

If there is any way that you can rescue HB910 from a slow death in committee, I and 824,999 other lawful licensed Texans would appreciate it.

Stay well and keep up the good fight!"

I signed it, gave my name, address, email, and phone number. I will not be an anonymous person to my doctor, nor to my politician. Some things are too important.
Senator Huffines is a Republican, not a Democrat.

No. Third reading. It goes to conference now, along with HB 910, both of which can be killed in conference and the following arguments in each house. It's clear that voting for Republicans is no better than voting for Democrats. We need an entirely new class of politicians - citizens.

I have ZERO respect for a "journalist" who can write this:
Last night the House approved campus carry, which would allow CHL carriers to bring handguns on college campuses in areas but let universities to determine where on campus handguns are allowed. That bill now heads to the Senate.
That is plainly false. SB11 passed second reading late last night. It is on the House calendar for today for third reading. Unless and until it passes third reading, it will not go to the Senate. If you are reporting on legislative matters, you should know this.

SB11 just came up on third reading. It's being discussed now.
