Definitely go to the gun show. It is worth the price of admission, just for the entertainment value! People watching, at it's finest.

You can handle lots and lots of different guns and see what feels right in your hand. Take a notepad. They all tend to run together after awhile.

As far as etiquette - most dealers will let you pick up anything off the table to handle. The big dealers will have cable locks so you can't go too far. Some of the collectable dealers do NOT want you to touch their guns unless they hand one to you. They will have a sign on the table letting you know.

So go, buy a redneck t-shirt and some beef jerky, maybe even some pickled okra and a scented candle. Handle some guns and have a good time. Then report back.

Reporting back. It was fun; sure is a lot of stuff to look at.. The vendors were very considerate - most took the locks off which is helpful - the women gave some specific advice which I needed; in all, I was able to make some decisions. I was there about 3 hours and talked to a lot of people. Great advice; it gave me a visual of what to expect.

If you are in the DFW area this guy http://chltx.com/ is an excellent instructor. A little partial to 1911's (Kimber dealer) but really up to date on the laws and teaches the law as it directly relates to daily carry. The class should answer your questions related to travel.

I was shocked to see your post as the guy that did our class was awesome. I went back to the link and clicked the "meet your instructor" link only to discover that this is not the guy who did our class. Our instructors first name was David which is the guy everyone talks about in the class reviews on the web page but not the guy who is now doing the classes. Not sure what happened to David.

If you'd like to come up to the far north side of Foat Wuth (up IH-35 halfway to Denton).... two suggestions:

Crossfire (who's been recommended to you before) is located in the big Cabela's store at IH-35W and SH170. Good rep on their classes.

Shoot Smart http://www.shootsmarttx.com/ is a public indoor range at IH-35W between Golden Triangle Blvd and Heritage Trace Parkway (if you're coming from downtown, take the Golden Triangle exit, turn left at the light, and then left at the next lite to go south on the service road.). They have a couple of folks who do CHL classes with good reputations - $100 for the initial class, shoot there at the range. I did my class with them a while ago - have happily sent several folks there with equally good results.

Yes, Crossfire has been recommended quite highly, and I'll be taking classes there when I can save the funds for it. Thanks for the welcome.
