Shimming/raising iron sights?

#1

Post by RHenriksen »

A friend of mine has an old Remington Woodsman 742 .308 with the stock iron sights. He tells me that he can't get his face/right eye low enough to line up the front & rear sights. I've observed him shooting, and it looks to me like he *does* have a good shooting position and cheek weld. He's Korean, so has these huge cheek bones.

So, I'm wondering - is there a way to raise the existing sights with some spacers? Or should I look for replacement sights? Don't think he's in the market to spend the $ on a scope.

I don't think using shims of any kind is really an option...at least I've never heard of sights being shimmed. Usually, sights are replaced with taller ones, at least that's the way it works with pistols.

Replacement sights are available for the Remington 742 from places like Midway USA or Brownells, but the problem is that I don't think that you will gain any significant height advantage. The typical replacement sights are of a different style and offer no height advantage. And, considering that IF you could find taller ones, both the front and rear sights would need to be replaced...well now you are talking about a significant chunk of change in the neighborhood of an inexpensive Weaver mount and rings and budget scope. The Weaver style mounts and rings can be had for very little and he could always upgrade the scope later...

My 2 cents...

Thanks. The Arms Room quoted me $100 and up for rasping down (and refinishing) the stock 'till he could line up on the stock sights. I passed the info along, not sure if he'll wind up pursuing it.
