You arent required by law to show a CHL unless youre carrying..The reality of a situation can easily dictate otherwise though..Reason being is that cops are people too.Just like any other profession, there will be some that are knowledgable in their jobs, and some that arent.

Case and point...I was pulled over for speeding one evening (wasnt carrying) and only showed the officer my DL.Upon running me,the CHL showed up.Cop comes back (with his gun unstrapped and hand on weapon) demanding "why didnt I show him my CHL?" I calmly and politely replied,"that I didnt have it with me,so therefore wasnt required to."Things were pretty tense for a few moments until I brown nosed enough to allow him to feel in control again..How dare we common citizens question an infallable officer of the peace??

"gun unstrapped and hand on weapon"...I guess he assumed that he was about to be blown away by a CHL holder. He must be biased against CHL to not realize that we are the least likely people for him to worry about. He needs to worry about those illegally carrying.

All you non-LEO guys-

Go sign up for a ride-along with your local PD, if they offer it. It'll open your eyes to what these guys are doing, and what they go through everyday.

It may not be the law to show when you're not carrying, but I agree with a lot of you that its just courteous, and why not? It's not like its heavy, bulky or awkward to pull out one extra card, right?

I'm not saying that you're legally wrong txi, just that I don't recommend your way of handling the situation.

So its easy for me...

"Yes sir, here's my "licences" and proof of registration, insurance."

You'll find out that getting stopped by HPD, you will never, ever talk your way out of a citation...ever...Once they pull you over the citation is halfway finished...They can't stop because it is an electronically filed citation...Once they start, they can't stop or erase the entry...

How convienient... ;-)

I reside myself to the fact that it is my fault, and that I deserve the citation...

That way I have a most excellent outward attitude (inside I'm boiling! hehehe) and everyone goes home that day...

I think it is easier to just present both ID's whether you're armed or not...
First of all, your registration is on your windshield. A little disingeniuos?

Easier? really? get stopped often?

He might just have suspicion that you are hiding something from him... and we're supposed to be the good guys and we're hiding something from him ... maybe! It just puts the encounter off on the wrong foot.

TXI, as a former LEO, would you not rather have someone be totally honest to you to begin with? Being honest and open--to a LEO--is the only way to be in my humble opinion. It's called cooperation.
Of course I want a person to be honest. If the person is NOT carrying, he is not being dishonest by not providing the CHL. Thats not a hard concept.

And your quote about how DPS handles traffic stops makes the point moot, does it not?

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers will ask you:

Whether you are licensed to carry a concealed handgun
Whether you have the gun with you

As a former LEO, I concur.
Yeah, but what do we know?
