Change of gender designation on CHL

Post by kate_r »

I have a Texas CHL. I live out of state with an out of state driver license.

I am transgender and I have undergone gender reassignment so I have also changed my gender on all my legal documents such as my birth certificate, passport and state driver license.

How do I update my Texas CHL? I don't see any forms for this, or even one to update misc biographic data.

Thanks for your time.

Yes, I know this may offend some, but in the end I am about as pro 2A as they get, and especially since trans people are often targeted for murder and assault, I do not want to be a victim.

Thanks for your understanding.

I think you are asking the wrong folks. You should contact Texas DPS.

No one here will ridicule you.

While we bicker at times with each other, it's generally done in a rather genteel manner.

I'm not sure you can change the designated gender under Texas law. As already noted, you need to contact DPS and see if that's possible.

Thanks Chas. I sent DPS a contact through their form.

As for not being able to do it, I'm almost certain you can do it since it is possible for Texas driver licenses which are also handled by DPS.

haha yes, Jazz is awesome! I am relatively young, early 20s. I did not transition as young as her but younger than many.

I do appreciate the warm welcome from you and everyone else.

Welcome to the forum, Kate. Hope you stick around and join in some of the conversations. I searched around the old interwebs and couldn't find an answer for you, so your best bet would be call DPS directly. Your post made me pull out my CHL to see if sex was on there...it is, but mine says "sometimes". :biggrinjester:

Welcome to the forum, Kate. Hope you get the answer you need from DPS. If they changed your DL, they should be able to change your CHL.

It's within the realm of possibility that yours will be the first case they've dealt with in this respect.
Please keep us posted as you get more information from DPS.

Welcome to the forum Kate! Keep us informed on what you find out as I am indeed curious about how they would handle it. As mentioned before, you may very well be the first instance the DPS will have encountered for CHL gender change.

Lives out of state with an out of state driver's license. Does Texas have a non-resident CHL? As far as gender designation, I agree with Mojo84. Texas DPS in Austin would be the ones to contact.

I think your gender will not be relevant on this forum, just your good manners. Welcome.
