What's a good truck gun?
I want to upgrade my "truck gun". I don't drive a truck but do drive a Honda Accord. I usually just carry a concealed Glock 17 when in the car but I was thinking of "upgrading". I got it narrowed down to a Kel Tec Sub 2000 (and I could use the Glock mags with those) or a Draco pistol. Anyone have any experience with these weapons? Is there some type of third weapon that could be better than these 2? Or should I just stick to the Glock?

Attempt at humor: From truck gun to Honda, sounds to me like a 3D printer made .22 from recycled fibers would be appropriate.
Serious: beyond your Glock I would only imagine a .223 pistol would do any more and likely might not be appropriate for various reasons.

I either have a S&W Bodyguard .38 or a Glock 19. But I never leave them in the car when I'm not in it. I always thought it would be pretty awesome to have a Rossi RanchHand in a holster in the car though.amaly23 wrote:I want to upgrade my "truck gun". I don't drive a truck but do drive a Honda Accord. Re: What's a good truck gun?
Rossi stainless steel revolver, 4" barrel, .38 special Lead SWC in nickel cases. This works for me.
Minimal maintenance, even with the changing temperature and humidity inside a TX vehicle. Simple, reliable, and I already own one.
Daughter has a Colt Police Positive. Because she insists upon a revolver, and shoots this almost as well as her S&W 19-5.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
A truck gun should be a proper long gun, preferably a rifle.
A pistol caliber carbine is still a pistol caliber... it is not a proper long gun.
Anything with a 7" or 10" barrel is not a proper long gun.
I keep a 16" midlength AR under the back seat of my truck. It has an A2 upper, carbine stock, regular iron sights, a 6P light mounted and a sling, nothing fancy. It is loaded and chambered and I have a MOLLE bag that can hold 8 mags, a basic cleaning kit, and a small bottle of oil. The rifle is in a soft case with grommets punched in the top of the case and it is zip tied to the rear seat frame so that if I hit the brakes, it does not slide forward. The end is left unzipped so I can reach in from the driver side and grab the butt stock and pull real hard and out it comes. Grab the pack that is right there and you have a rifle, 9 total mags, and cleaning kit in under 10 seconds.
I would have zero problem having a cheap AK or even a SKS as a truck gun. I know a guy who keeps an old .30-30 lever action as a truck gun. That would work fine too. It just needs to be a long gun, preferably a rifle.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
I have a folder sks, a folder AK and recently got the Kel Tec Sub 2000 for Christmas
I really like the Kel Tec Sub 2000 as I carry twin Glocks already, and I got several laptop cases for it that wear great in clinics/doctors offices and places posted 30.06+30.07 where my two larger folders would be out of place looking.
I carry it with 20 round mag inserted (Glock 17 mag with Pearce grip PG39 which adds 3) and a few spare mags in the laptop case)
You cannot carry folded with round chambered, but can carry with magazine in and the bolt back to just release bolt after unfolding. Which is what I do
Honestly it sits in my house except when I'm going to a 30.06+30.07 posted place clinic/hospital etc which is not otherwise an illegal "Places FIREARMS/weapons" prohibited location. Better humidity control in the house than the "truck"
I wish they made it in Stainless, but I like it.
I actually ordered and paid more for the Glock 17 version, they shipped the Glock 19 version by mistake, but I'm kind of glad now.. I kept the Glock 19 version instead of returning. (grip is shorter is only difference, the 19 version holds Glock 19 mags as well as the 17/33 round mags. I was going to shorten the Glock 17 version grip myself anyway to make it a Glock 19 version with my own grip shaping, but oh well.
Bought laptop cases off Amazon ( I like Samsonite's best. but using a thinner cheaper one. Case Logic 15-17" (VNM217) most of the time $23.49 from 50+ stores https://www.google.com/search?q=Case+Lo ... p&tbm=shop
My SKS and AK are in Guitar case/Tennis racket cases and look out of place carrying into hospitals/doctors offices/clinics etc, I carry my tablet, phone with some pens and a notepad to write what doctors say with my Sub2000 in different compartment, ... not out of place looking really like a tennis racket/guitar in those locations. I suppose one could carry their knitting in one compartment on some Laptop cases compartments *More "gussets" or compartments in some (like Samsonite's for vacation travel) to knit in the waiting room too LOL

Re: What's a good truck gun?
Thank you. I'll stick with the Sub 2000 and with the laptop case since I could easily carry that around in the car.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
I would like to ask you to elaborate on your reasoning behind the statements of barrel length and what constitutes a "proper" gun. To me an SBR or shorter firearm that can be easily manipulated inside the vehicle and safely and effectively deployed upon egress would be primary criteria. For example, I have a 7.5" bbl AR pistol and a 8" bbl 9mm SBR. Both mount a 1X optic and both are combat accurate at 100 yds. They are obviously CQB adequate. Trying to gain / understand better your perspective, thx!AJSully421 wrote:A truck gun should be a proper long gun, preferably a rifle.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
A low cost Hipoint 9mm carbine can reach out much farther than a 9mm pistol and makes a good truck gun.
They're low cost, and quality is good enough, not great, but again, good enough.
They're dependable.
Yes, they're Ugly.
They get the job done out to 50 yards, easily and even 100 yards.
If it's stolen, no big loss.

Can you explain a bit more about carrying a sub2000 into posted .06. & .07 areas? Is it because those paragraphs only apply to pistols? I am curious because I own a sub 2000 9mm Baretta mag type (I also own a 92F and a cx4 storm, all take the same mags).
I bought it many moons ago as a camping or car carbine, but I don't use it much. Your post opened my eyes to another possible use for it. Tell me more.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
Everyone has an opinion and I disagree with his. I recently stopped carrying a long gun and started carrying an AR pistol since I realized I was violating federal law by carrying it loaded through gun free school zones. I didn't even realize I was doing it until someone on this forum mentioned it. Now I am in compliance with the law and I have a .30 caliber pistol that fires projectiles at rifle velocities and it serves the purpose that I carry it for.Bitter Clinger wrote:I would like to ask you to elaborate on your reasoning behind the statements of barrel length and what constitutes a "proper" gun. Re: What's a good truck gun?
When I get a few extra $, I will get the Sub 2000. With improved accuracy over the pistol, lightweight folding design, interchangeable magazines with my CC, I think it is the best all around choice for me. I think it has the most flexibility for the circumstances I plan for while going about my daily activities. Of course for a road trip, I can always throw an AR in the trunk as well.amaly23 wrote:I want to upgrade my "truck gun". I don't drive a truck but do drive a Honda Accord. Re: What's a good truck gun?
I found a Kel Tec sub 2000 at a LGS.
They wanted $750.00 before tax.
I passed.
For that kind of money I could buy another AR...

Re: What's a good truck gun?
I forgot to mention the cost of a Hipoint 995TS.
A whopping $299.00 for a basic unit.
I bought one with an optional foregrip for $324.00
I mounted a Lucid M7 Micro Red Dot sight from Primary Arms on sale for $99.00 on it and I can easily hit within 2/3" at 50 Yds.
Is that great shooting?
No, but it's effective enough if I encounter Jihad Johnny.
Not bad for an el cheapo truck gun.

Re: What's a good truck gun?
my truck gun is an ar pistol w 12" barrel. it was meant to be a rifle caliber pistol. so w 12" barrel i can still get rifle performance to further distance no sbr nfa paperwork required and is still quite shootable( sure a stock would be more desirable but i can still get it done quite easily with the pistol w no nfa headaches). oal is 26.5"
this is in addition to my g26 edc
I am seriously thinking of getting a keltec gen2 sub2000 in 9mm/glock19/17 mag version
for the sole purpose that its a rifle and doesn't violate 30.06 and folds into a 16.1" package
the keltec su16 5.56 folded is still 26.5"
so the keltec sub2000k in 9mm has the advantages of not violating 30.06, smaller package than ar pistol, less likely hood of over penetration issues compared to 5.56, may be more shootable than a pistol for some.
the only downside is cost for what it is and deployability and relative concealability over a pistol.
so it doesn't exactly replace my truck gun but it is a reasonable substitute for my edc if needed
