I was hoping for the FN entry to be chosen.

I wonder if they were looking at the aspect that this doesn't ID a soldier as the designated marksman the way a SCAR based weapon would.

Nothing special on this rifle, but Accuracy, Suppressor, HK Reliability and that special German Optics. :clapping: :clapping:

I read somewhere that that was a consideration, but I haven't been able to find the RFP/solicitation on line to see what the actual requirements were. Can't find the final contract either, but a bit soon for that probably.

Of course a big honkin' scope on top of the rifle and a can on the front might be a give-away, no matter how M-4ish it appears. I think the main objectives were shorter/lighter, and able to be used as a close-up "regular" rifle in a pinch.

ELB, If that was the case, someone screwed up. I just read that the G28 Patrol will weigh in at 11.35#, and the Standard at 12.79# WITHOUT Optics/Suppressor/Magazine attached. Testing has it at 1.5 moa 100m

The SCAR SSR (Mk 20) is 10.3# and supposedly sub moa out to 1000m

The winning rifle is designated the G28E. My understanding is it is based on the Patrol version, but was lightened in various ways to make it weigh less than 9lbs unloaded, and w/o optics and suppressor. This is second-hand info, I haven't yet found reliable specs or RFP on it.

This is from almost four years ago, when the Army started formally looking for a CSASS -- they may have changed since then:
1. Operation: Semi-automatic
2. Caliber: Compatible with 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges
3. Accuracy: Capable of 0.60" AMR at 100m or better with match ammunition.
4. Size: Overall length shall be reduced using a shorter barrel and/or collapsible buttstock. Maximum overall assembled length of the rifle shall be not greater than 36 inches with the stock at its shortest position and no sound suppressor mounted.
5. Weight: Weight shall be no more than 9.0 lb for the unloaded rifle without optics and accessories.
6. Grip: A modular, adjustable pistol grip.
7. Trigger: A non-adjustable match style trigger.
8. Hand guard: A fore-end that includes a fixed 12 o' clock rail with configurable 3, 6, and 9 o' clock rails.
9. Sound suppressor: A muzzle mounted, detachable sound suppressor.
10. Muzzle device: A compensator/muzzle break compatible with the sound suppressor.
11. Bipod: Tool-less detachment featuring cant and pan/track capability.
12. Day optic: An Army specified variable power day optic and compatible rings.
13. Back up sights: Iron sights offset 45 deg from the DOS.
14. Sling attachment: Flush cup, quick detach sling attachment points.
15. Barrel and Receiver Life: Significant improvement from M110 requirements while enduring higher rates of fire.

In addition to the above listed enhancements, the CSASS must meet the operational and environmental requirements that were fulfilled by the original M110 SASS.

Sort of. The current SASS (M110/Knights Armament SR25) is more of an AR-10. The H&K G28 uses a gas-piston design rather than a Stoner-like gas impingement system.

.....like my AR15, which also has a gas-piston....and was really expensive.
