Seguin: Cop shoots robber

Post by ELB »

This is of interest to me since I live and work around Seguin, and the initial event was at a Pic'n'Pac I stop at a lot because it is near where I work.

Police shoot, kill armed robbery suspect after chase ending in Kingsbury

Seguin Gazette requires subscription to read the whole story, so I shall try to summarize:

Tuesday 26 Apr at 2323 a guy entered the Pic'n'Pac at the southwest corner of SH 123 Bypass and I-10 wearing a ski mask and a motorcycle helmet, and carrying a pistol grip shotgun...well, not just a shotgun, but a "shortbarreled, pistol-grip, assault-style shotgun". I'll be interested to see if this really had a short barrel, or it just looked like it.

Anyway, the clerks locked themselves in an office and called 911. The guy wandered around the store, then got on his motorcycle at the same time the police arrived. The officers saw him put the shotgun in a backpack. He led them (including county deputies and state trooper) on a chase to Kingsbury, about 10 miles away, stopping a couple times enroute.

Near the intersection of SH 90 and FM 1104 he stopped for good, got off his bike, and paced around with the backpack in his right hand while arguing with the cops. Apparently he walked back and forth edging his way closer to the police. The police said they told him at least 42 times to drop the backpack.

He then "(placed his hand inside the backpack and took a 'shooting stance') while pointing his arm and bag at officers" and one of the Seguin police officers shot him with a "department issued patrol rifle." Boom, DOS.

Unsurprisingly the robber, Darrel Machemehl, has a history of armed robbery, fleeing from police officers, and resisting arrest.

He will no longer be an issue now. Good riddance.

Apparently, experience is not necessarily the best teacher.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

The officer used good judgement when he fired, IMO. No doubt in my mind the bg was getting ready to fire on the officers.

As far as the convenience store that you shop at, just proves that something like this can happen anywhere, at any time.

This happened at 11:42 p.m. If I have to be ANYWHERE at that time of night I'm always in condition orange. Very little good happens at that hour.

:iagree:
Sorry that the officer now has to have that memory. Not sorry that stupid has a price.

I don't know about that. I'll bet he never does it again! :biggrinjester:

ELB, I don't have a subscription to the Seguin Gazette, but I was able to read the entire article at your link. :tiphat:

Convenience stores just off the Interstate are prime targets. This happened in Seguin also, just down I-10 a couple miles:

I find this ^^^ more disturbing than a straight-up robbery -- it could have gone very bad very fast.

Now that is truly scary! I think I would have dialed 911 after the first 5 cars showed up!

My flying instructor often claimed that the beauty of experience was it enabled you to recognize a mistake when you made it again.

I read the article in full, no problem.

OK, good, sometimes it just shows a teaser and you have to pay to see the rest.

The Seguin PD has a pretty active Facebook page. If you scroll down a bit, there's an entry where the posted a home security camera video of some kid swiping a delivered box off of a front porch. A couple people in Seguin recognized him and he was nabbed. :thumbs2:

There was a poll, one question, and that was all. The article was visible.

Maybe they wised up that people were not going to shell out for a subscription for one article. The business I work for has a subscription, so I get in for free.
