Attackers Take Hostages at Bangladesh Restaurant

Post by Skiprr »

A group of as many as nine gunmen attacked a restaurant popular with foreigners in a diplomatic zone of the Bangladeshi capital on Friday night, taking hostages and exchanging gunfire with security forces, according to a restaurant staff member and local media reports.

Sumon Reza, a kitchen staffer who escaped the attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka's Gulshan area, told reporters that the attackers were armed with firearms and bombs as they entered the restaurant around 9:20 p.m. Friday [July 1, 2016] and took customers and staffers hostage at gunpoint.

Not good. I usually stay at a hotel only four blocks from that place when I'm in-country. I've never been to that bakery, but I've had meals within a block or so of there often.

I hope all involved come out OK (well, except for the attackers - I hope they end up DRT).
Your best option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
When those fail, aim for center mass.

ISIS claims responsibility; not unexpected. Dhaka police report four officers and/or security personnel killed. The dead includes the assistant police commissioner. Other casualties include GSWs and "broken bones." Team of attackers now said to be seven or eight; total hostage count about 40.

A doctor at nearby hospital said they had received 26 wounded, six in critical condition.

John Kirby of the U.S. State Department said all of the Americans under the diplomatic chief of mission in Dhaka are accounted for. Accounting for other American citizens who may have been in the area continues. "At no time was the embassy compound itself under immediate threat from this attack," said Kirby.

Another "unfortunate event" as BO would say. Just waiting for Potato face ketchup Kerry to come out and say that ISIS are losing.

Prayers go out to all of the victims and their families.

Update:
ABC News wrote:Emory University says two of its students were among 20 victims of an extremist attack in Bangladesh. The confirmation brings the American death tally to three, after a University of California-Berkeley student was also counted among the dead.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in Bangladesh on Saturday, saying it targeted foreigners.
Overall toll stands at 28 dead.
