I will get in another last word by saying that the FBI has been caught cheating with the NICS records before. I would not assume that the dealer didn't see previous transactions in NICS (altho I don't know the working details of what dealer does see).

(It is also possible that the dealer was making a joke and didn't really see any previous transactions, I suppose.)

What I don't understand is that the gun store asked if I had a LTC, like it would get me threw the transaction quicker. I didn't want to waste their time or mine. Had they been up front and said "even if you have a LTC, we do the background check" I would of said ok that's fine and walked out. I'm not the the type of person that will complete a transaction because I put a lot of time into it.

One time I was a few signatures away from buying a car after about 2 hours into the transaction, they dealership tried to sneak in a extended warranty for a couple of grand. They said they were giving it to me, I assumed it meant free. I walked away from the car they said they would take it off but I told them I couldn't trust them and left.

I have thought about what I would do if that happened to me at a car dealership. I came to the conclusion that I would call either the local PD or SO and report a case of attempted fraud. I literally HATE thieves.

The advice I like best is find another gun store. Unfortunately I really like this store because it has a great website and a store front in Coppell, TX that I can pick up my purchases without having to do a transfer through a FFL.

As far as NICS checks - FFLs can only see the checks that are in process under their NICS account. He'd have no idea what other guns you've bought. That's assuming they're using eCheck. The phone system has even less info. Sounds like he was blowing smoke.

Now, other states maintain their own databases. If buying in a state that has a state "NICS", those records may be available longer.

I've bought a couple guns from grabagun in person. The last one was just last week. They weren't the fastest in terms of check out time, but if they made a phone call I certainly didn't notice. Everyone I've dealt with there has been extremely friendly and professional. I'm still waiting on a couple things I have on order. If I think about it I'll ask when I go to pick them up.

I think as stated above, the correct terminology is not exempt, per say, but at the dealer's discretion an FBI BG check is optional. I have heard of several instances where the dealer has still done the BG check. I bought a shotgun in may, and got to skip it, as well as two lowers in June, also skipping the background checks. Sure does save some time! I have waited over an hour on checks before, and when I bought my shotgun I was in and out of the store in roughly 15 minutes.

It normally takes me about 30 seconds to get an answer on an E-NICS check. I can have someone in and out in five minutes.

Maybe I have been un-lucky in the past, but the first pistol I ever bought took over an hour. That was at academy in 2014. Last year I bought a block at cabbalas and waited on my bg check for probably at least 30 minutes. I have no criminal history if that would slow it down any.

My most recent was an AR10 at Academy (pre douchebaggery by them) and it took about 15 minutes, no check.
