S&W M&P15 Sport II
Re: S&W M&P15 Sport II
Last Saturday I was finally able to take my new MP15 Sport II to the range. Not only was this rifle new to me, but the MSR style is also one I've never shot before.
Was nervous about the first trigger pull since it has been a long time since I shot a rifle. Pleasantly surprised at the low recoil (no, I wasn't traumatized). The first 3 shots were to right of center, so I clicked a couple of notches and fired 3 more. Still right. Repeated this process and never could get into center ring, always right. After about 9 clicks on the Mapul MBUS rear sight, I thought perhaps I was turning the wrong way, so went back the other way, ended up even further right. Reverted again, but ran out of time before I got rounds on the center ring.
All that being said, when I unboxed the rifle I noted that the rear sight aperture was pretty far left of center of the space, so I dialed it over to near center before going to the range. Is it possible that the factory had the sight close to the proper alignment and my adjusting to center messed it up?
I'm thinking of having the rifle bore sighted (with the stock sights, no optics) at 25 yards. Anyone have thoughts?
Thanks!

My Ruger AR 556 also shot to the right. I hadn't moved the adjustment at all before shooting. I finally got it set after about six groups of four shots each. I think it took a total of about 10 clicks to get it aligned. looking at the sight it appears that it would actually be way off but it hits dead center from a rest, I still pull it sometimes when shouldered, but that's just trigger discipline on my part. Mine has an A2 front sight, and like you I am not very familiar with the platform, so I don't know if the front sight is aligned properly with the top rail. A laser bore sight should give you a better picture, I have them for all of my other rifles, don't know why I didn't pick one up for my AR before going to the range.
Take away the Second first, and the First is gone in a second

My rifle has an A2 front sight and an mbus rear. I bore sighted mine buy taking off the upper and looking down the barrel at a marker I put on my back yard fence.
The magpul sight has an arrow showing you which way to turn the knob to move your group to the right. The front sight shows the direction to turn it to move the group up.

FWIW, I own a Spikes Tactical and absolutely love it. It likes steel cased ammo as much as it likes brass. Which I guess not all AR style rifles can say that. I don't know since this is the only one I own. But I couldn't be happier with it. It does what it's supposed to do, which is go bang... every time.bblhd672 wrote:I'm now looking at spending more and leaning toward a Spikes Tactical LE or the Colt LE6920. I'd never heard of Spikes Tactical but reading some good reviews.

Finally made it to the range today. Love it...well over 200 rounds using multiple brands and types of ammo without a single failure. Sights were right where I expected them at a 25 yard range. Again love this gun. I am now more confident than ever it was a great purchase; however, if I had it to do over again I'd buy from a local dealer instead of Academy.
For those wandering. I have added an extended (non-floating) quad rail (AAR-157 under $90 at Cheaper Than Dirt), red/green dot sight (Vortex Strikefire 2 under $180 at Amazon.com), and GVN forward pointing grip (under $14 w/PTK at Amazon.com.
Felt great...cannot say enough how pleased I am.

Re: S&W M&P15 Sport II
I got mine about 2 months ago, the week before Academy pulled all the wicked black rifles off shelf and hid them in the back room, or safe, or whatever.
Mine has been a joy to shoot. Here are some velocities I took recently with several 55 and one 62 grain loads.
I still like my 2 Mini 14s, but since the M&P has joined the family they haven't spent much time out of the safe.
(Can't seem to paste in my Excel spreadsheet, so will just type my 3 shot averages 10' from the muzzle on an 85 degree morning.)
Winchester Q3131 '15 55 gr. 5.56 3084 fps
American Eagle XM193 55 gr. 5.56 3083 fps
Winchester Q3131 '07 55 gr. 5.56 3070 fps
American Eagle XM193C 55 gr. 5.56 3055 fps
American Eagle AE223 55 gr. .223 2986 fps
Winchester M855 62 gr. 5.56 2973 fps
UMC L223R3 55 gr. .223 2941 fps
Federal bulk 55 gr. .223 2890 fps
Federal "white box" 55 gr. .223 2852 fps

I've read a lot of great reviews about this product. When I have the funds to get one I think I'll go with the Sport II
