NYPD...Well, I dunno how to headline this...

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

NYPD...Well, I dunno how to headline this...

Post by ELB »

http://nypost.com/2016/11/28/nypd-vets- ... tter-guns/

The NY Post thinks the story is the academy grads are getting the new mo' better Gen 4 Glock 17s (or G19s or Sig P226s) for free, but older cops have to buy them.

But farther down in the story:
The gun, as designed, can hold 17-round magazines — two more than the Glock 19. But the NYPD had the manufacturer customize the Glock 17s to carry only 15 rounds so it would be consistent with the interchangeable Glock 19 magazine.
That's why I put this in the Political forum. Something this unhinged has to come from the cultural/political climate that has no genuine grasp of firearms and their place in society.

It is possible that they are having the guns chopped to shorten the grip and keep the longer G17 slide. That's the only way I can think of to make a G19 mag fit.

At that point and cost, why not just get G19s?

Whose cousins wife's little brother's son-in-law is getting the contract for the conversion? :biggrinjester:

Well you do get the benefit of the longer slide from the G17, which should translate into better accuracy. But since concealment should not be an issue, and the stated reason is cost savings from maintaining compatibility, then yes, I agree with you. They would be better off just giving everyone a G19 if it is so costly to have 2 types of magazines on hand.

I was actually thinking of doing a chop on my G19, but then I shot it side by side with my G26 and noted that I didn't have a noticeable difference in accuracy between the two guns as-is, so I could not justify the cost of doing this vs just carrying my G26 when I want something a little more concealable. For me, at least, I decided that it was a solution in search of a problem.

I would just get the new guys Glock 17s and give the old guys Glock 17 mags. That would seem to make the most sense to me. The new guns are more accurate, but the older guys who already use the Glock 19s get new mags with 2 more rounds. They can always carry it as a spare if they like the original Glock 19 mags better.

Your questioning the actions of a bureaucracy? That is a futile exercise in itself. :banghead:
