Birdshot is deadly at very short range because the closely clustered pellets create a large wound and with their high initial energy penetrate much further than they would when spread out and traveling more slowly at distance.anygunanywhere wrote:The first shooting I responded to in my EMS days was a drug deal gone bad. Victim was shot in the back at close range with birdshot. He bled out and was pronounced at the ER. The shot perforated the coronary arteries.
I am not advocating bird shot for self defense but we all know that Shot placement, Shot placement and Shot placement are the keys to stopping a bad guy.
If all you have is bird shot use it.

Have a friend over 30 years ago was shot at about 75 feet with birdshot in an kidnapping/abduction attempt. She was hit on the side and had over 200 pellets in her face, arm and torso. To this day still has shot they could not remove from her due to being too close to nerves or vessels that over the years works its way to the surface of her skin.
When I first saw the thread title, I thought TAM had relatives in law enforcement. I guess we would have to call him TAC.

I don't believe the Officer was hit by a full load of shot. He would have at least have eye damage if he had. I have regularly spit shot from a dove breast which was kill at distances greater than 50 ft. I personally use # 1 buck for HD. However. I'm not volunteering to take a full load of birdshot to the face at 50'.

I had an older dove hunter in a hunter ed class around 10 years ago who had taken a hit from high brass 6s at 90 yards. One pellet went smooth through the web of one ear. 4 more pellets buried so deep in his neck and face that his wife, over a 2 1/2 day period, was unable to remove them with tweezers. How do I know this? I got to look at him for 5 hours on the front row on the evening of the day a doctor did what his wife could not. Not pretty.
