I've went 37 yrs without it, I can go a couple months more. Besides, I am not even sure what to carry yet. I have thoughts on the Glock 23, Sig 229, or going small with the Sig 232. Any suggestions?

There's nothing wrong with the SIG P229. It's a bit on the large side for some people, but it's a popular concealed-carry pistol. Of course you have your choice of calibers there, 9 mm, .40 S&W, or .357 SIG. Only the 9 is relatively cheap to shoot.

I have no experience with the others that you mentioned.

Everyone has an opinion about this, and one man's favorite is another's piece of junk.

My suggestion would be to find a range near you that has rentals, and take a a few that you're interested in out shooting. It's pretty important that the gun you pick fits your hand well and that you're comfortable and accurate shooting it, and that you enjoy shooting it enough to practice with it.

Personally, I carry a 229, and it's just about the perfect gun for me. I can't imagine wanted to switch to anything else, at least on any consistent basis. Some folks, however, aren't comfortable with the width, since it's a double stack, or simply don't like it because it doesn't fit their hands properly. There are plenty of good guns out there to choose from, and finding one that works for you is not only important, but it's an excellent excuse to go out and shoot a lot of different guns.
