The best way to protect bears is for humans to respect them as wild animals and not feed them, not take selfies with them, not try to pet them, and not do any other damnfool thing you see too often at national parks.

Best for the bears. Best for the humans.

Maybe not best for gun salesmen. :biggrinjester:

Yes seriously. I am not gonna go buy a 44 mag just to carry for two hours about two - three times a year. Although that does give me a good justification hmmmmm
Buy the 44 mag. Give the wife the 9mm so you have both a backup and she can defend herself if need be.

You can now justify the purchase. “See honey, I bought this gun so now we both can be safer”

Please, all you need is a .22 to get away from a bear! All you have to do is shoot your friend in the foot to slow him down enough so that your faster! :biggrinjester:
"Jump in there sport, get it done and we'll all sing your praises." -Chas

How many times a day could you say this? :cheers2:

There have been plenty of incidents where people were attacked and were not doing any of the above things you mentioned, not everyone provokes them. A friend used to be a surveyor and his job required him to be in the woods in bear country. There was nothing he could do (well if he wanted to keep his job) to stay away from them.
