Perfect Score Myth

a couple of old buddies of mine finally decided to take the CHL class today and one of them called with his review of the day's events. He said their instructor insisted that they not shoot a "perfect score", so they both sent a flyer on their last round. Sheesh.... I thought this kind of myth had been put to rest. Are instructors actually told to teach this?

It would be hard not to shoot a perfect score. The test isnt that hard. If someone rarely shoots or never trains then they might miss the "long" shots but still would score high. At ACC several in the class shot perfect scores. 1 Marine couldnt count his, he shot a 2 inch hole literally out of the middle of the target.

The only record of score is "pass" or "fail".

A "perfect" score, as far as anyone knows, is the minimum required to pass. Other than that, all qualified CHLs scored exactly the same: "pass".

exactly my point. It seems there is still this urban myth that if it is found that a person involved in a defensive shooting had scored a "perfect score" on the range qualification that they are somehow an easy target for an over zealous DA.

This is what my instructor told us too; you pass or you fail. If it ever came up as a question in court, no one will be able to testify any different.

Do to my CRS (Can't Remember Stuff), I don't remember what I shot!

Back when I took the very first class(1996) the instructor told us they recorded your point score on the paperwork.
It would look bad if you shot a perfect score if you ended up on trial.
Since that time they changed things.
Now the paperwork only shows pass or fail on the shooting test.

I wonder if they also advise their children to avoid a perfect 4.0 GPA in college because it will look bad if you ever have to apply for a job.

Heck, in MY class, when my group did Qual, only myself & one other shooter had a decent group. Both of us left a mostly ragged hole in the target, but some folks were all over the target at 3 & 7 yds! I'm not even sure if all of them passed.

Perhaps they just didnâ€™t want to discourage any one shooting all over the target!!

Now that I think about it, I donâ€™t believe they did any thing other than glance at ours, I guess the standard is such that they can tell just by looking at the target, no need to count holes.

When I qualified I intentionally spread them around a bit. I'm not a great shot, bit at 3 yards and even at 7 its pretty easy to put a couple in the same hole.

Thank you all. This little item has caused quite a riff between myself and my two very good friends. Even though I now feel vindicated by the wisdom and knowledge here, I'm going to just let the issue go with them. Both of these guys are educators, and both nearing full retirement (in "points"), one of which has been a school principal for the last 10-12 years. Sometimes I wonder about my friends with master's degrees
