I was reading about the “electrical fire” at the Notre Dame Cathedral and came across this:

So what would that be? A property tax specifically for retirees? Taxing their pensions?

Low wage earners in France are already taxed about 50% to pay for all the free stuff. For example, they have free day care for working mom’s. But if your married and have a working husband and you also have a job, your at the bottom of the list for a spot for the free daycare. Usually the wait time is 5 years, but by then the child is in kindergarten.

Really no different than taxing Social Security! For all practical purposes Social Security is a tax and when you draw social security it's taxed, so your getting taxed on a tax!

I don't think it's a tax on retirees as much as a cap on tax free pensions. It looks like the first 1200 Euros per month is excluded from income taxes, but taxable after that. IANF

We already have that in the U.S. I figured out my taxes this year based on my small pension. Then I added in my Social Security and my tax burden jumped significantly. I bought a tax free municipal bond before I started Social Security. It became taxable as soon as my Social Security payments began.

A couple with a combined annual income between $32,000 and $44,000 will pay tax on 50% of their SS income and pay tax on 100% of their non-SS income.

A couple with a combined annual income over $44,000 will pay tax on 85% of their SS income and pay tax on 100% of their non-SS income.

Do you still contribute to SS when you work? I’m asking but I’m assuming you still do, as it’s free money for the govt.

I guess if your over 70 your also forced to declare a part of IRA’s as income as well.

The yellow vests were out protesting. They were incensed that the French rich were so quick to donate millions to Notre Dame. They may get a deduction, your paying 90% tax why not.

Unlike here in the US, French working poor pay high taxes. Since there is so much free stuff, if you work you pay. A French friend showed me his first US pay check. He was concerned his employer had not taken enough out of his paycheck for taxes. He was used to 50%. At the time he made about 15 euros an hour in France.

A traditional IRA is a tax deferred account. You don't pay income tax on what you contribute, so you pay income tax on withdrawals. If you want withdrawals to be tax free, contribute to a Roth IRA with post-tax money. Uncle Sam is getting his bite one way or another.
