Do you mean that having the cover garment up between your body and the guard it is also out of the way of the thumb release? When I put a cover shirt like that with the one I have, without the guard, it does interfere a little with the thumb release, so I don't do this.
To be clear in my terminology, the ALS guard just protects the thumb release. The Hood guard is the part intended to present a grab from the front. The Hood guard is what allows to put cover garment out of way of the thumb release (assuming not too bulky, of course.)

Here is a link to hood guard only (for certain models) -- pictured in this is a thumb strap with hood guard. I have the 6008, which is ALS guard and hood guard combined (no thumbstrap).
