taking the Class

Post by tboesche »

Well, I am off to take my intital class. I am attending a class at "The shooting place" An indoor range near Burleson. I will be using my CZ-75B for the class. I will post impressions of the class and results tomorrow.

Ok. Getting ready to watch the race in Atlanta, but I have a few minutes.

The class was great. We had 9 taking the intitial class and 5 more join us in the afternoon for the renewal class. Weapons ranged from, a couple 1911 variants, a couple glocks, My CZ, a Ruger P89, I think there was 1 sig and the rest used Rental guns. One lady that was taking the renewal class used a rental Glock. She could not even load the magazines by herself. One of the Rangemasters had to load each mag for her. Kinda weird I thought. PERSONALLY, I think you should have to be able to completely make the weapon function on your own if that is what you are going to qualify with. MY OPINION!

Anyway, Lots of good discussion, everybody qualified. Just by glancing at the targets, I shot the best, I'll take a pic of my target and post it tomorrow. We had an off duty Burleson PD teaching the class, he carried a glock on his belt and a compact Glock in an ankle holster. Real nice guy. Had lots of insight to share and answered everybodies questions pretty good.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday

We have had a couple of discussions here about that.
Suppose an older person, maybe someone who lives alone and tries to do her own shopping and such. This woman may have arthritis making loading mags or even charging her automatic.

Is it a good idea to deny this woman the right to protect herself? Is the RKBA only for the most able in our society? As long as there is someone who can load her mags for her and make her gun ready. Why is it so important that she has to have the ability to load her own mags? or even to cock and load? The ability to defend herself safely should be all that matters.

Just my most humble opinion.

Lib.

Not trying to deny anybody the RKBA. I just feel the individual should be able to function. If loading and making ready an automatic is physically not able by the individual, then carry a wheel gun. In a crisis, I want to have full confidence in the weapon I am putting my faith into.

A couple or three points:
  • Most people who have a CHL will never fire a shot in self-defense.
  • If they do, they won't empty a magazine.
  • If a defender can't reload under stress, and needs to, it is that person's problem.

An inability to fully function makes the CHL all the more critical. While a 21 year old male may think its important, but to a 75 year old arthiritic woman a handgun might be the only chance she has if attacked.

In the situation I mentioned an older arthritic person could have problems with a double action trigger, or even handling the recoil of a revolver. I understand than an initial impression would seem that loading a mag is a very basic skill, but does it really matter in the scheme of safety and effectiveness? Is it an issue so large that she should be denied the basic right to defend herself? I feel it is even more important for women and older women in particular to be given the tools to be able to defend themselves, and to do so safely. Is it an ideal situation? No, we should all be perfectly healthy, strong and young.

For what its worth. I have a touch of arthritis in my hands and it would be painful for me to load 50 rounds without my little loader tool. So I load up about 100 rounds before I go to the range and maybe 100 more while there.
