Sigh... clock just got reset

Post by Big Dom »

Anyone else born in a different country? Maybe you can help. Just got a letter from the chl office requesting additional info. Evidently they won't accept my birth certificate because it is in German. I was born in Germany, my father was in the military. My mother is German and I hold a dual citizenship. Now they want proof that I have citizenship. They request I send the documentation in English. Any body have a clue of what I need to do. I don't have a birth certificate in english. The one I have that is written in German was always good enough. I dont know where to start.

Do you recall what you presented to prove citizenship?

I was born in France while my parents were stationed overseas. I have a French birth certificate. I also have a Certificate of Naturalization as was commonly issued in the 1950's.

My son was born in Germany while I was stationed there. He received a Certificate of US Birth Abroad. I think it was issued by the State Department.

The German birth certificate is not proof of US Citizenship. There must be another document. If you have the old expired passport, I believe you can send it in as proof.

Okay my dad found one that expired in 1986 though and is stamped cancelled. Presumably because it was expired. Think this will work or do I need to go through the whole process of getting a new passport? Also is it possible to get the birth certificate translated and notorized.

Edit scratch the translation question. After reading the post above this one I realize he has a valid point. That still wouldn't be proof of citizenship.

I sent in copies of my French birth certificate, my Certificate of Naturalization, and my active passport.

A passport is marked cancelled when they issue a replacement so there might be a newer one.

Call the DPS folks and see if the old passport will work.

Thats what I was afraid of and we can't find the newer one. I will call them tomorrow to find out. You would think having a social security card would be proof but I guess not.

There may be bigger issues when you actually need a passport.

Here's a link telling you how to get a copy of Consular Report of Birth Abroad:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fi ... t_825.html

If you could find the passport issue in 1987 and you meet certain requirements you may be able to renew. See this link for details:

Thanks so much for the info I'm going to follow up on that. I was thinking the same thing I need to go ahead and get it renewed regardless. I just didnt want to have to wait on a new one. From what I understand I think it takes a while. Anyhow going to contact them tomorrow as well and find out exactly what they require. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.

The service costs but they deliver.

You might check and see if your parents have a Certificate of Birth Abroad for you. I was born in the Philippines (Air Force brat) and therefore have a Filipino birth certificate. I also got a Certificate of Birth Abroad, confirming me as a US Citizen. I sent a photocopy of this along with my app and had no problems with the processing of my license.

My situation is a bit more complicated. My mother is a German native who is now naturalized but at the time I was born they weren't married. They have the certificate for both my brother and sister but not for me. I don't think it was filed and they had to go back after the fact and go through a process to get my passport. Unfortunately it was so long ago they don't remember what it was. They dont have the paperwork anymore either.

The good new is that the chl office says though they prefer a current passport they will accept an expired one. Not sure if that means I'm good to go or not. What I did is went ahead and sent them a copy of what I had and then went down to the post office and applied for a new passport. I had the old passport which they gladly accepted and told me would be returned when my new one is issued. The whole process took about 5 minutes I did the paperwork online and printed it off before I went in. I figure if the chl rejects what I sent them by the time I get notified my new one will be here. If what I sent them is good enough no harm done and I needed to get my passport updated anyhow.

I then logged on to buds gun shop and ordered me a new Taurus 651 to give me something to do to pass the time. Should make a fine carry piece my buddy has a 650 I shoot very well. Anyhow hopefully its all sorted I'm gonna kick back and try not to think about it. The wait is truly torture.
