What is different between the 45 cases on the left and the ones on the right?? The top row is the same as the bottom except that the ones on the bottom are deprimed

Look at the primer pockets.

The one on the left measures .170 ''''''''same as the 9mm case next to it.
the headstamp is....WIN NT 45 AUTO
.......do these take your standard small pistol primer?

The one on the right measures .207 ''''''''your standard 45 acp case.

I was wandering why some of my primers would get crushed. I guess I will be looking at my brass closer and toss those in the scrap can.

The one on the top right appears to have a crimp in it. It's difficult to tell from the photo.

To answer your question, it isn't good to use small pistol primers (even if they appear to fit the primer pocket) for applications that call for large pistol primers.

The ones on the right are "non-toxic" ammunition and have small primer pockets. The ones on the left are standard. You can put small primers in the NT cases and shoot them with no problem at all. Only thing that bothers me about them is it messes me up when I'm using my progressive reloader.

Winchester thought it would be a good idea to use small pistol primers in ALL there 45 acp brass because the 45GAP used small pistol primers and since the 45GAP was going to be the handgun cartridge of the future they could save money. I believe they've abondoned that idea now though and all 45acp winchester ammunition is back to large pistol primers.

At least, that's what I heard.

Win NT head stamp do take small pistol primers so they get sorted out during caliber sort before cleaning. In addition there are some Speer 45 acp cases that use small primers but the only difference in headstamp is more room between letters and the primer pocket so I have to slow down during sort anytime I see a speer case to make sure it is large primer.

I've heard from alot of people who say they don't sort their brass by headstamp, just caliber. They tumble them, throw them in the case feeder, and load. WIN NT and AMERC are the main reason I sort by headstamp, plus it gives me time to handle each case and check for cracks or damage that are more visible after cleaning.

Nope!

If you insist on reloading them, wait till you have enough of them for a separate batch and then use the small primer.
