Memphis, January 4 -- Police were investigating a theft when the resident of a home released a dog described as a "pit-bull" . The dog attacked the officers. One of the officers fired three shots, one of which penetrated his own foot. "Police were still investigating Friday whether the dog had been shot."

I guess a foot pursuit after the dog was out of the question.
I hate to say it but ,when you panic the adrenaline surge creates tunnelvision and you can in your haste to stop the threat,fire before you even have a sight picture or realize where your weapons pointing.That's why it's important to practice the basics as often as possible,even going through the movements with an unloaded firearm,the chances are in a high stress situation your training will take over.I also hate to say it but if a person can shoot himself in the foot ,it could of been an innocent bystander etc. bullets ricochet

Yep. Atttacks by aggressive animals are chaotic, dangerous situations.
