Want to start competing.

Post by Tactical_Texan_CHL »

I just joined our range here that hosts many different competitions. I'd like to get into IDPA for sure, and probably try 3 gun, and maybe high power. What types of equipment do you guys suggest? I have weapons that are already probably just fine for all competitions. I'm considering using my Kimber Raptor as the pistol to compete with for all events. What is allowed for 3 gun, and for high power competition? I read in the NRA guide that a service rifle is required. Does that call for a stock service rifle? Or could I use the AR that I'm about to put a free float tube and longer barrel on? I plan to go watch the next match. They have IDPA the first Saturday of each month. Advice or suggestions from any of you competition veterans is appreciated.

My current equipment ideas:

IDPA: Kimber Raptor, with Hogue grip panels, and maybe a Wilson Combat mag well if it's legal. Blackhawk Serpa holster, probably 5.11 vest for cover garment.

3 gun: Kimber Raptor; stock Winchester 1300 Defender; DMPS M4gery with 16 inch barrel, free float rail system, vertical foregrip, collapsible stock and flip up open sights (Eotech in the future)

High Power: DPMS AR with 16" heavy fluted barrel (20" or 24" coming soon), YHM free float rail, A2 stock, bipod, BSA Catseye scope.

The best thing to do is download the IDPA rulebook from idpa.com and check the equipment rules. Your Raptor with a magwell would be fine to shoot CDP division in IDPA. That Blackhawk holster though is not IDPA legal because you can see light between the holster and your belt.

Your choice for 3 gun is OK but, service rifle is iron sights only. Most service rifle competitors I know use a 20" barrel and A2 sights. Actually, I think that is a requirement.

OK. I've printed the rule book and read it. I think with my Raptor I can shoot ESP or CDP. If I want to shoot SSP, I'll have to use something else, probably a Glock 17. It also looks like I can use a stainless barrel in that G17 as long as it is of factory configuration and caliber. Unless material of construction is a factory configuration. I have a Galco F.L.E.T.C.H. holster for my Raptor, and it looks like that's legal, also have matching Galco mag holders, so I'm good there.

Does anyone else who lives around here compete in the IDPA shoots at MSA? I'm planning on going to watch a few times, but I'd like to at least meet someone there to visit with and ask questions if I can.

I'm not finding a lot of decent information on 3 gun matches. Does anyone know of a GOOD site for them? Is there a governing board like IDPA? I keep getting local shooting ranges versions of 3 gun tactical matches, but no standardized rules or anything like that.

I think I'm going to wait on the high power thing, I'm not that good.

I shot the classifier last week. It was the first time I ever shot. I did watch them shoot regular matches a couple times before, though.
I'm going to compete at next month's event. So, if you want to get together, before then, go over together, meet up, whatever.

Honestly, i think you need to just go prepared to shoot. Great guys, and by the time you see two or three guys shoot, you'll be ready. promise...
