Please add my nephew Kenrick to your prayer list. His college room mate apparently committed suicide today. He found him when he came back to the dorm room just before leaving for Spring Break. There will be some post traumatic issues to get through over the next few days to weeks, and he will need your prayers and the Lord's help to deal with them

Actually, if you are a saved Christian who believes that Jesus died for ALL of your sins - past, present, and future - and His spirit resides within you, then you are washed clean in His blood, and even suicide will not keep you out of heaven. You have to realize that mental illness does not disqualify one from salvation, and that suicide is most often an act of mental illness.

On September 29th of 2007, 3 days after my father in law died with us at his side, my employer of 8 years, and very good friend of 14 years, committed suicide. He was the sole owner of the business, so from 9/29 to 11/16 (my last day of employment until just a few weeks ago), my job became to run his business and keep it profitable until his wife could sell off the company's assets. I was mad as heck at Jim for doing that. He left a wife and two kids behind. He put 5 people out of work - one of whom was his own brother, and all of whom enjoyed their jobs and liked working for him. He was a Christian and a great guy. But he also had battled Bipolar Disorder most of his adult life. He had kept it mostly under control with medication, and he was highly functional; enough so to own and operate a profitable printing business.

However, he had recently been put on a new medication, and he didn't like how it made him feel. So instead of taking the problem to his doctor, he started taking less than the prescribed dose. Why? Because his disease was affecting his decision making process. He began to spiral further down into a deep depression, which he would deny to anybody who asked if he was OK. In the end, he was so miserable that he killed himself. What he did was not the act of a rational mind, particularly if you know the particulars of how he did it, as I do.

I am sure that, in some kind of twisted internal logic, he thought that he was doing an act if kindness - believing that everybody he cared about (including his employees and friends) would be better off without him in the picture. In the end, the only way I can accept his suicide is by realizing that he died of his disease. It devastated my own life for a time, both emotionally as he was a close friend, and financially as I lost my job as a direct result of his death. Even though, almost 6 months later, I still can't believe he did it, I can no more stay angry at him for it than I can be angry at my father in law for dying of cancer. He lost his battle with his disease. That's all there is to it.

There is nothing in Christianity that says that people who die of their disease are eternally damned. Outside the context of his mental illness, Jim was an awesome Christian. He was generous. He gave generously of his time and resources to the body of Christ, and he was generous with his employees. He loved the Lord. He is now with The One who loves him best. I cannot believe that the same Jesus who wept when his friend Lazarus died, would deny the salvation of a man who loved God, just because he lost a fight with mental illness. That would not be the Christ I call my King. MY Jesus knows his sheep and he loves them.

I'm sorry if I was too much on my soap box in writing this stuff, but it is still very fresh in my mind and in my heart, and I will never see suicide the same way again.
