This shows you how much your Sen./Rep. are paying attention

Post by Doug.38PR »

Below is an E mail sent to my father, who sent it to me thinking maybe the "Senator" mean't me. I replied that I had no idea what the Senator was talking about either. Neither of us had ever contacted him about Federal and state lands and firearms. How they god dad's e mail address I have no idea.

This just goes to show you how much "they" are paying attention. They just have people in their offices who send out general "thank you for 'your' concern" language to whoever.

What a sad state of affairs, when you can't even write your Senator or Congressman back and have THEM respond. Just goes to show you the country is too dang Big and Bureaucratic
Dear Mr. -----------:

Thank you for contacting me about federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

It is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

As you may know, the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service allow the transporting and carrying of firearms on federal lands in accordance with the laws of the host state where these two agencies manage lands. However, the National Parks Service (NPS) and the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) are governed by separate federal statutes and have developed differing sets of firearms regulations. I believe the inconsistency in firearms regulations on federal lands is confusing and burdensome to those who enjoy the outdoors. Therefore, I support legislation that would require NPS and FWS to honor host state gun laws that govern firearm possession, including Senate Amendment 3967 which I am proud to cosponsor.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

But at least he's on the correct side of the issue.

by his words anyway. To me it's just bone throwing. If he doesn't even take the time to realize who he is writing to or if his staff has become so bureocratic that they don't even know what they are doing...that is a serious problem. BTW, this isn't just an isolated incident. We've gotten mail from other reps and senators regarding things when we never even wrote them much less knew what they were talking when we got their letter.

Used to be if you wrote your congessman or senator or even the governor you would expect a letter back from them personally. Today we are so big a country that even our local districts are so packed. Add to that the fact that "our" government is so bureocratic that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing nor do they know their head from their hind end...well it becomes little more than a joke

I guess if you want to be mad there's nothing any of us can do to dissuade you. I do find it rather ironic that on one hand you are complaining about not getting personally signed letters, yet on the other hand you state that you DIDN'T contact him, or any of the other reps and politicians.

As bdickens said, the key thing is Senator Cornyn is one of the good guys, and his voting record on various issues is far more important than whether he or his staff sometimes screws up the correspondance. He represents over 22 million Texans, so if wants to keep track of my calls and letters by computer, more power to him -- I for one am much more interested that he and Senator Hutchison keep voting the right way than becoming pen pals with them. And I want him to spend his time putting the arm on other senators to pass pro-2A laws, not burning up his franking privileges send out letters to each constituent.

elb

Full disclosure -- I once had lunch with Senator Hutchison. Doubt she remembers me, but she probably remembers the lunch, since it was on an absolutely beastly hot humid sandy gritty day with the mess hall lights going out when the generators overheated. Heh.

Well, my story is more at the local level, but hopefully it restores a little faith in your elected officials? Read my long post at the bottom.

And I agree with the earlier posters - at least Cornyn is on the correct side of the debate on this issue. Could be worse, your Senator could have the name Obama or Clinton, and then try writing a letter to them about gun rights.

Cornyn is on the correct side of the debate on almost every issue.

I'd love to see him as a Veep candidate, but it won't happen because TX is pretty much a lock with or without him.

He would even be good at the top of the ticket. If we lose this time, I'd be a big fan of his for 2012.
