Entry-level LEO jobs at UTMB Galveston
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is desperate for entry-level police officers. They will hire qualified applicants who do not have a LEO certificate and put them through the academy. Starting pay $36,459 per year. Pay increases to $39,636 after graduation.
The basic qualifications encompass everything required for a CHL, plus passing a physical examination and having 60 hours of college, or 30 hours and two years military service.
Phone 409-772-1503. (I can't find an online version of this ad.)
Texas A&M at Galveston and the City of Jamaica Beach (which is on Galveston Island) are also looking for certified LEOs.

I have heard that working extra jobs is strictly prohibited when working full time for the UTMB PD, which explains the quick pay increases. I do not know this to be fact.

Extra jobs are allowed but strictly regulated....Not where alcohol is served, not for another LEA no more than X-amount of hours per week. Must use personal gear and generic patches etc etc
Heres a link http://www.utmb.edu/police/POLICE%20EXAM.htm
If you are a retrired lateral hire with 11 years experience, you can make probation then jump right up the payscale to 56K.
When you factor in OT and shift differential it is very common for these guys to make 70k per year without much effort.
If you go to the academy, they pay you 36k while in school, per diems and all room and board and equipment
Anyone interested that qualifies will almost be certainly hired due to staffing increases needed for the GNL biolevel4 lab that will be opening. JUST remember this is a University Campus/ medical facility so dont come in with high expectations for car chases and vice stings like you see in an episode of COPS... LOL

That's okay by me. The dangerous stuff looks good on TV but a boring job that lets you go home safe every night has a lot to reccomend it.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

UTMB is a less risky environment than being on the street, but it's not completely boring. Every now and then the police have to deal with visitors who lose their temper, ruckuses in the E.R., and lunatics who were treated there and wander back.
UTMB also has a lot of prisoners receiving treatment, but the ones that I have seen were in too bad shape to be much of a threat.

Well its not completely safe....TB, Hiv ,Hepatitus, being spit and bit at you by drunk psych patients can ba a real problem. Once the national biodefense lab opens we will go up a notch on terrorist lists i'm sure. Then hantavirus, ebola and all that nasty stuff could be an issue, but there are tons of security precautions in place.......but on a good day worst case scenario...you get hit on by a pretty nurse
