Don't call DPS today--Emancipation Day State Holiday

Post by lws380 »

Called to speak to DPS director regarding his letter to me. Was told he and upper management was off for the holidy. I asked what holiday. The lady tried to say Emancipation, but could not pronounce the word after about 4-5 attempts. But I have to give her credit for the several attempts she made! So I had to look it up on line. I guess because she could not say Emancipation, they made her work!

June
19 - Emancipation Day In Texas (partial staffing holiday)
House Bill 1016, 66th Legislature Regular Session. Chapter 481. Approved June 7, 1979 and Effective January 1, 1980 in honor of the emancipation of the slaves in Texas in 1865.

No wonder people just call it "Juneteenth".

I thought everybody learned about Juneteenth in school. Especially in Texas. I wish 4/19 was celebrated as widely as 6/19.

Good question. 4/19 was the day that the battle of Lexington/concord too place, starting the revolutionary war.

It was also the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

It was also the day that the ATF killed 81 people for someone failing to pay a $200 tax.

Patriots' Day. Shot heard 'round the world. An attempt at gun control which turned into an all-out war.

Allegedly failing to pay a tax. No evidence ever surfaced (to my knowledge) that any NFA items were ever found there.

Lots of other interesting historical things happened on April 19:
