I don't have a Bug Out Bag. I see no need to "bug out" in Amarillo. Even if I lived in a hurricane prone area, I'm sure the 4 or 5 day notice that the hurricane is coming will be sufficient for me to make arrangements. If Pantex here gets blown up, I can't outrun nuclear fallout. Can't run away from a tornado. I guess the only thing I would bug out for is a wildfire.

A couple of years ago, I got the family interested in camping. It gave me an opportunity to purchase and create several trunks of supplies necessary to set up a family sized camp site and live in relative comfort for days/weeks in the woods. After every trip, we clean the gear and restock the trunks. It's great family fun and meets my definition of a "bug out bag", although it's probably more than most people would take: cook stove, propane, tents, lights, first aid kit, utensils for cooking and camp prep, etc...In addition to the camping kit, I also have a "road hazard" kit in my car that includes first aid supplies, jumper cables, air pump, basic shelter materials, water, etc...

One of the challenges, in my opinion, with an emergency kit is to integrate it into your lifestyle so it does not become a bag of stuff that you never use and soon loose interest in.

My "bug out" bag in the car has a leatherman knife, entrenching tool, water purification, basic trauma kit, four spare magazines, a flare gun, and a twin of the "wilderness survival" kit I take when I'm camping, hunting or hiking. The bag is an old daybag in basic green. I also have a breakdown kit in the trunk with jumper cables, hand-crank flashlight, road flares, a flat repair kit, xyz. I have a two week "hunker down" kit at home with water, canned food, camping cooker, extra batteries, plastic sheeting, duct tape, emergency blankets, etc. I rotate and use the batteries, food and water so it's not expensive.
