Name your gun?

Post by agbullet2k1 »

Ok, this question has been bugging me for a while now, so I just have to ask and risk permanent embarrassment. Does anyone else name their guns? Maybe not all of them, but at least the ones you carry?

I'll go first...
I named my first gun "Khan," as in the villain in Star Trek (yes, I know, I'm a closet trekkie). My thinking was that a codename for it was perfect for discussing it with people in-the-know when we were around people who didn't know I carried. "Hey dude, Khan's showing."

Ok Rooster cracked me up. I'm glad I'm not the only one. My wife wanted to name our Glock "Cinder," as in cinder block, but I vetoed that.

It could be worse... you could have said I named my first gun "Khan" as in the character from King of the Hill -- Kohng Koy Kahn Souphanousinphone.

Image
Kahn Souphanousinphone is the Hills' materialistic, Laotian American neighbor. He is prejudiced against whites, southern whites in particular. He frequently boasts his superiority to the others, but Hank bails him out in several episodes. Kahn occasionally wrestles with the fact that he has a daughter, and has even referred to her as his son in times of frustration. In the episode "The Blue Grass is Always Greener", Kahn reveals that the reason he pushes Connie so hard is because after she becomes successful, he wants to take her to his hometown to boast. Kahn is an anagram of Hank.

This is just my take, and in no way means any kind of condemnation.

I read a thing on JPG's "The Expert Witness" blog THIS.
I will leave it only as that.

once again, this is in no way a dig at any one else's desires, beliefs, or whatnot.
ymmv, as ianal, afaik, iirc.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Good point. Name a weapon, and you start thinking it has a spirit, and thus a will of its own, and that's counter to every pro-gun argument. Not to mention the Marine drill instructors generally look down on disobeying orders: "Sir, the private's weapon's name is Charlene, sir!"

OTOH, naming the weapon, as OP said, does provide you with a handy code word to refer to it in public without revealing that you are carrying concealed. It could go either way; I'd say give it a discrete name, nothing like "blooddrinker" or "excaliber", but an identifier that is something other than descriptive of the weapon, and not a personifying name.

My son and I sometimes refer to my 5" Model 29 .44 Magnum as "Big Poppa," but we just do it once in a while because it's funny. But other than that, we don't actually have names for any of our guns, and not on any kind of philosophical or moral grounds; except the notion that my guns are tools and nothing more. Some of them are beautiful tools, and others have sentimental value, and they are all to varying degrees satisfying to shoot, but they are still just tools. If there is ever any "spirit" involved in their use, it is either a spirit of fellowship shared by friends and family at the range, or the spirit of righteousness in self defense. I don't name my socket wrenches or screwdrivers either.

Edited to add the following...
I just remembered that my son did name his Taurus PT1911 "Loki" when he first got it, but he doesn't usually refer to it by that name. He usually just calls it "my 1911."
“Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.”

Good grief, it's just a thing. It's not like your naming your children. It's all in jest.

We have a habit of naming most of our inanimate objects, but haven't taken to naming our guns yet. It's a good idea, though, as whenever we're talking about them we have to use the models, etc, which is time consuming.

drw: "So, I'd like to get some practice time with my SP101"
mrsdrw: "Which one is that?"
drw: "That's the 357 magnum revolver that I keep in Little Green" (That's my small green pickup truck)
mrsdrw: "The J frame?"
drw: "No no no, the heavier one I got in Frankston a few months ago"
mrsdrw: "Ahh, right. What about that one?"
drw: "I'd like some practice time with it."

This kind of conversation actually occurs in our house at least once a month.
