Final Part of the Background Investigation?

Post by pbwalker »

So I'm at 71 days now and have been constantly contacting my reps and the DPS CHL office themselves from Day 60...not to nag, but...well...I guess it is nagging. I got a reply from same gentleman I always get a reply from, Mr. Christopher P. Super nice guy and always quick to reply. He has informed me that my application "has been sent to the final part of the background investigation."

What exactly does that mean? The Feds?

I'm getting anxious!

That's DPS code for the shredder.

The background check includes the following elements, that I know of:
  • federal criminal background check
  • criminal background check in each county in which you have lived and worked for the last five years
  • check for defaulted child suport
  • check for defaulted state taxes
  • check for defaulted state loans
  • possibly a check of a medical database for mental health problems (I'm guessing about that)
No one who knows what order they are done in is talking.

The next time you call, instead of talking to whoever answers the phone, although I agree Chris is polite and nice, ask to speak to a supervisor, so you ca nactually get a steight answer. That may help. But realize we all (myself included) have gotten the "Run around" for over 100 days before we got issued out plastic, mine was/ is 102 days, so you have a little more time to go. Good Luck!! :cheers2:

There are two background checks happening, one by the FBI and one by your local county authorities. Both must be received before your license is issued. I presume he means "final part of background investigation" to mean that one of the two checks has not been received yet.

But did it really? It still took 102 days to get your application, which appears to be in the normal range these days. If your license was received in 60-70 days it would be a different story, and I would think that the complaining would have helped. However 102 days doesn't stand out as being any faster than those who kept quiet.

The final part is what happens after they open your packet.

You are right. I wont argue that point however it did help me deal with it more sanely. I have seen people in this forum that are WELL over 100-120 days and Ive also seen people who it took 80 so truthfully there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the system down there. However I think if you call and bug DPS (after a certain amount of time) they will be held a little more accountable and even if it doesnt hurry them up it will keep their eye on your application and it wont get buried on a desk somewhere. For instance when I called yesterday, Heather (who is VERY nice) said "Oh yea I have your licence here and I need to get a # from fingerprints" I asked her when she was going to do that and she basically did it right then, and called me with the good news. How long would it have been on her desk if I hadnt called. Im not sure but it more that likely would still be there... So yea, youre right....
