ARLINGTON -- Two gunmen who forced their way into a southeast Arlington home Tuesday afternoon “blasted through the back door with shotguns, tied up a couple and their adult son and took the woman’s jewelry, a 911 audio recording says.

WOW! That's only about 2-3 miles from my house as the crow flies. That's getting too close for comfort.
And my wife wonders why I carry even at home.

Re: Day Light Home Invasion.
this doesn't surprise me as it happen's in Houston all the time. I was at work one day when a nut job scared my then 10 yr. old stepson by peaking in our front window in broad daylight. Too bad I wasn't at home at the time to try and sick the cop's on the loser!

Re: Day Light Home Invasion.
Serious question, and don't think for a second I'm advocating not having a gun handy, but against two guys with shotguns, do you really have a good chance to prevent this kind of thing even if you keep a shotgun in arm's reach? I mean, my apartment has no windows on the wall with the front door. That's good 'cause there's only the door as a possible break-in point, but the downside is that if someone takes a shotgun to my front door I probably won't know a thing about it till the first blast goes off, and I'm normally Condition White in my own home unless I hear potential trouble. If someone wants into my home and they have the means to blow the deadbolt and the (rather strong) burglar latch off, they're coming in.
So seriously and honestly, how many here think that under normal conditions you would be able to get to your gun in time to fend off two armed home invaders? Do you have a plan for this scenario? Does it involve your S.O.?

It will mostly depend on the lay out of your house on how much time you have. My GF knows that if ANYTHING threating happens, she is to run the farthest part of the house from the threat. There WILL BE a gun within reach no matter where she goes. The only one that gives the least amount of time would be the front door. But when i am home I am rarely in the front room. Therefore I will be able to defend against the threat in a very short time.Liko81 wrote:Serious question, and don't think for a second I'm advocating not having a gun handy, but against two guys with shotguns, do you really have a good chance to prevent this kind of thing even if you keep a shotgun in arm's reach? You're right that the extreme entry method used in this home invasion will defeat most standard door locks so quickly that perimeter penetration would be almost instantaneous and there would be little opportunity for effective response. That's why it's worth considering nonstandard devices for some doors. The one in the link below will slow down even an entry like the one described for the critical 10 seconds or so you need to put a well conceived predetermined plan into action:So seriously and honestly, how many here think that under normal conditions you would be able to get to your gun in time to fend off two armed home invaders? Re: Day Light Home Invasion.
One thing I have begun doing since carrying is to not only lock my regular door, but lock the storm door as well. Since it opens outward, they have to defeat that door first and get it open before breeching the regular door. I would like to believe that critical few seconds could make a difference. I so the same with my family, I tell them to go to our bedroom and get the AR. Even if I don't make it back there they have an AR with 180 rounds to have a chance for them to make it. And GOD have mercy on the perp(s) if I make it back there to the AR.

Use a dead bolt that can only be locked from inside and is not visible to someone outside the home. Also don't place it on top of the normal dead bolt. It may just slow them down long enough for you to get your long gun into action. Sorry but anyone who is blasting my door with a shotgun is getting lead through the door if I can get there while they are still trying to gain entry. Also remember that if you can slow them down they are at a severe disadvantage since the have to go through a bottle neck entrance point.

My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

I bought a stick that hooks under the doorknob, and has a foot that goes on the floor in front of the door, acts as a brace.

A well trained Home Defense Dog would defintely help slow down the BG's possibly allowing time to get to your defensive weapon of choice. Unless of course they knew about the dog.

Good idea, and I've seen them, but it may or may not be effective. Remember that the BG is shooting out the deadbolt, and probably the door latch as well. Chances are good that burglar bar's going flying. A better option might be to place the bar at the base of the door and brace it against a door jamb, staircase or baseboard. This isn't always possible (hence the above design which is more universal) but when it is it's more likely to withstand your latches being shot out and still keep the door closed.DoubleJ wrote:I bought a stick that hooks under the doorknob, and has a foot that goes on the floor in front of the door, acts as a brace.

Re: Day Light Home Invasion.
Without going into details about door lock construction and shotgun door breaching techniques, the doorknob is not the point that is usually attacked. Shooting this portion of the locking device would be more likely result in a badly jammed mechanism instead of a quickly opened door.Good idea, and I've seen them, but it may or may not be effective. Remember that the BG is shooting out the deadbolt, and probably the door latch as well. Chances are good that burglar bar's going flying.
A bar like the ones illustrated in several posts below would be very likely to survive the initial attack and prevent or delay entry for a tactically useful period of time.
Keep in mind that shotgun door breaches are not the norm either, and the barricade bar devices are extremely effective against the much more common body force entry techniques.
