Assisted Knives - Cabelas and BassPro

Post by BigBlueDodge »

So, I went to Bass Pro with my brother in law, because they had a rifle on clearance that he was wanting. We took a drive up there. While he was filling out paper work, I walk over to the knive stand to take a peek. I need a new knife and I've been interested in the assisted opening knives. The guy working the counter shows me all of the assisted opening knives, let's me handle them, etc. They don't have anything that catches my eye so I don't buy anything.

Skip forward a couple days, and I find myself in Cabelas looking around. I walk over to the knives stand and ask the fella working behind the counter to see his assisted opening knives. He asks for my police ID. A bit surprised, I said "Huh?". He says he cannot show me an assisted opening knive if I'm not a member of a police or law enforcement agency, as it was against their policy. A bit shocked I asked him why? He said that he can't sell assisted opening knives to regular people, because the minute I step out the door I would be arrested. He says that assisted opening knives are considered illegal to possess outside of your house, which means it would be illegal for me to carry the knive from the store to home. He said that only LEO can purchase these knives. I just chuckled and told him thanks for his time.

Was he just misinformed? I mean, Bass Pro had no problems letting me hold, or buy one if I wanted. As far as I know, assisted opening knives don't fall under the umbrella of switch blades, and thus are not illegal. Can someone conirm if this guy was just wrong.

He just hasn't been informed of the difference between assisted opening and automatic.

What he said would be correct for automatic being illegal, but probably not enforced to the level he described.

The last time I looked at knives at Cabela's in Ft. Worth, they had the same policy.

I didn't buy a knife from them.
