Dont be so hard set againt carry with out a holster. I have a good friend that is a police officer who carries off duty with out a holster. He just hooks the ambi safty over his jeans and then it does not move.

I was an LEO for a couple of decades too. I tried and experienced the drawbacks of AIWBNH carry up close and personal, and saw several less than optimal incidents others had as well. My own analysis is that it's an option for a hasty need (eg, answering the door to someone who is not yet identified as friend or foe), but I wouldn't use or recommend it for anything else when better choices are available.

I shared the drawbacks I am familiar with for the benefit of the members who may find them useful. Folks who have specialized needs whose importance overrides the drawbacks I mentioned and those who simply disagree may decide to use AIWBNH anyway. We all make our choices and live with the results. Some may recall my cautions when they try to figure out how to scoop the gun that just slithered down their leg off the restaurant floor without anybody noticing (been there, did that successfully, and learned from the experience).

I'm happy if my post simply helps to make some of those choices better informed by bringing to light things that may not have been considered before, regardless of whether my recommendations are followed or not.
