Re: whats a good field
I hear the Navy is hiring...
Seriously, the military pays a lot better than it used to. The training is top notch. And transition into the civilian world is very easy if you pick a marketable job field.

This might give you a few ideas of something to look into and what to avoid: http://www.myplan.com/careers/career_top_ten.php
edited to add: I just saw the post above mine. The Navy is a great idea also. Possible signing bonus, free education, and get paid to travel the world...

Re: whats a good field
The best thing you can do is just pick something you could see yourself doing for the next 50 years, and then stick to it. Avoid resetting your career often.
It is fairly easy to get into some trades with little or no training, but eventually you are going to have to become skilled at something if you want to be successful. The military idea is a good one! They will train you whether you like it or not :) and you will gain valuable skills while instilling a very good work ethic.

You may find that they can get you into shape pretty quickly :) Consider it a benefit. You may also find your athsma is not bothersome once your aerobic fitness and lung capacity are up to snuff.
Also speaking of being in shape, you will have a much better chance of getting a good job if you are attractive and fit in appearance, not to mention clean cut, well groomed, etc. Whether the Navy does that to you or you do it yourself, it works.

Re: whats a good field
Thats kind of what I was thinking. Your an out of shape 22 year old with no skills who still lives with his parents? That's going to make a tough road ahead. If I were you I would at least talk to one of the recruiters and find out if you can become eligible. Asthma is not a disqualifier, and flat feet is not always a disqualifier, either. There are weight standards, but you can decide to get in shape if the goal is worth it to you.mr.72 wrote:You may find that they can get you into shape pretty quickly :) Consider it a benefit. The job market is tough right now, and that is with people who have experience and skills. You might try retail or a service job in a restaurant.
What have you been doing for the last few years? Do you have any type of degree? Or classes taken in college?

I don’t know about the Navy, but the USMC will get you in shape, will except flat foots, and will teach you a trade.

Re: whats a good field
Alright, so you have a background in mechanics. Since the military is out, have you considered working for an oil company? It sounds like your background might fit in as a junior maintenance tech, and it pays pretty well. The pipelines and pumps need maintenance, too, so you wouldn't necessarily have to go out to an oil rig.lunchbox wrote:ok i get it about the militaryCommander Cody wrote:I don’t know about the Navy, but the USMC will get you in shape, will except flat foots, and will teach you a trade.

It's something I considered when I got out of the service. The benefits, pay, and training are pretty good.
If you're looking for a field change, I would probably look into some sort of maintenance tech...with an oil company or otherwise. You'll have to work, or you won't last long, but you did say you carry your weight well.
Re: whats a good field
yes i have looked at oil field and also ship channel tug boat etc etc. i have filled out apps for all i can find but alwase end up with nothing im not sure how to get those jobs beyond filling out apps. as there never is any kind of contact info and lets face it my resume is not that impressive.Kerbouchard wrote:Alright, so you have a background in mechanics.
