A Real Way to Save the Children - An Update Rant
I have a rant on . Severe in the strongest sense.
This past week two children died at the hands of adults - in cars where the adults FORGOT and left the child in the car.
I am tired of the incessant whining about children hurt by firearms when so far this year 26 children have been left in cars and died nationwide. SIX in Texas alone.
There is no excuse.
Adults who leave their children in cars deserve prison time. NO discussion required.
These parents need to turn off their cell phones, turn off the iPods, stop thinking about aditioning for the next american idol, stop panting for the next big brother, bachelor, survivor garbage, and put their best effort into being parents and grandparents.
I can not fathom how an individual can forget about their child in the car. I can not, will not ever understand how an adult can be so narcistic, so self centered, so focused on their own world where they would forget about their child.
Let me explain how it is in the real world to these "adults". When you choose (since that is the commonly accepted right that these mud-for-brains idiots use to describe what a decision is) to have children, it is not just a sideline, part time job you leave each day, it is a full time responsibility that is not to be taken lightly.
Rant off until the next time one of these innocent angels die as the result of a thoughtless brain-dead action/inaction of a part time parent/ full time wasted piece of human flesh.

How in the ---- Can someone "forget" that there is a small person in the car?

People make mistakes, I do and you all do too. Imagine for a moment that you made a mistake one day and your child dies from it. Do you really think the court system will do a better job of punishing you than you will do to yourself?
The death penalty for a parent who makes a mistake? This wasnt a parent setting out to torture their child, locking them in a closet for years or anything even intentionally mean or harmful its a mistake. Prison? Do you think that will make them think about it the next time they are walking away from their car? I'll bet they will never think of anything but that when they walk away from their car for the rest of their lives without ever setting foot in a jail cell.
Now the parents who intentionally leave their kids in the car, they are a different matter because of their intent. Yes, intent matters.

The death penalty is too good. Philosophically.
In reality, if a child kills themself with one of your handguns, you are negligent and criminally liable. Negligent parents who leave their children in cars should be treated the same way.
The parent of a child killed with a negligently handled firearm is just as traumatized by the ordeal as one left in a car to fry in the heat. Thesecond one this past week was a little three year old boy who managed to wiggle out of his car seat. There was evidence he tried to start the car and roll the windows down. Think how the little angel suffered. Think how he screamed and cried wondering how his mother could leave him like that.
The death penalty is too good for them.
We have over four pages of discussion on a man shooting a dog in defense of his children. Four pages in defense of a dog.
The dog did not die.

And I fully support that father for shooting the dog. If an unrestrained dog comes running toward my kids and I even think it might be dangerous I will kill it too.
I feel horrible that a child would die like that, but at the same time I have compassion for the parents and the pain I can only imagine they feel about the situation. A forgotten kid is a hard to understand but at the same time the intent to harm is not there so I cant see how prison or the death penalty will help. It will not correct anything it will only punish (severely) for an accident.
Like I said before, if you leave the kid in there "for a minute" while you run in to the store for something you should be punished for the action because you made a conscious decision about it.

A mistake? A MISTAKE?!?! We're talking about leaving a living, breathing human being to bake to death in a car. How do you "forget" you have another living, breathing human being in the car with you? It's not like its "darn I left my wallet in my other pants!"

Why don't you go berate a grieving parent who's done just that?bdickens wrote:A mistake? A MISTAKE?!?! We're talking about leaving a living, breathing human being to bake to death in a car. Maybe if owners were leaving dogs in the car to bake to death we would have 12 pages of certain posters telling us how neglectful the owners were, and how they needed to suffer the same fate as the dog. It appears there is more compassion on this site for dogs or animals than there is for children.
Just on observation on my part by reading some recent posts on this forum.

I made up my mind the first time this happened I would willingly break any window of a car that had a child trapped inside of it. I would hold the child and if the parents came out before the cops got there I would not let them have their child back until Police showed up. There is no excuse for this to happen. Honesty its an even bigger crime for the parents to not even get a slap on the wrist.

Re: A Real Way to Save the Children - A Rant
I'm tacking this onto this thread because:
A) It involved a car
B) It involved a child
C) It involved death(of the child)
What's going to happen in this case? Vehicular Manslaughter?

Police Investigating Crash That Claims the Life of a 6-Year Old
Last Edited: Sunday, 17 Aug 2008, 8:33 AM CDT
HOUSTON -- Police say alcohol may have been a factor in a northeast Houston accident that claimed the life of a 6-year-old child.
A woman in her 30's was heading eastbound on Will Clayton Parkway with her 6-year-old child in the front passenger seat when she veered off the roadway and slammed head-on into a pine tree, police said.
Police said the woman told them she fell asleep behind the wheel, but officials found beer bottles in the car. Witnesses also told them she smelled like alcohol.
Houston Fire Department officials spent 25 minutes prying her and the child out of the car, police said. Both of them were transported to Ben Taub Hospital initially in serious condition. The child later passed away.
Police later stated that the woman's blood alcohol level was .24.
She has not been charged.

Re: A Real Way to Save the Children - A Rant
Can you start your own save-a-child thread please? There are laws against what that woman did. S far I have not heard where anyone is charged in the deaths of these 26 children who have died in cars so far.CainA wrote:I'm tacking this onto this thread because:

Normally I am not so sensitive to thread wandering/hijack and I am at fault occaisionally but this time I must insist. No offense.

This would a great sales pitch for On-Star. Just add a motion sensor to the unit and anytime the ignition is turned off, the motion detector calls On-Star. The operator can hear what's going on and determine what's going on inside. They could then call the authorities, lower the windows & set off the alarm.
And if GM could attach a taser mechanism to the key fob, they could alert the owner.

Re: A Real Way to Save the Children - A Rant
Isnt it Volvo that has the heartbeat monitor inside the car that is sensed by the keyfob? it was originally marketed as a way to know that a bad guy is waiting in the car for you but I have heard it more recently spoken about as a way to remind parents that there is a person left in the car.SCone wrote:This would a great sales pitch for On-Star.
