Gavin de Becker on Oprah Winfrey show

Post by seamusTX »

I do not routinely watch Oprah, honest. I saw a teaser for this show earlier. She has spent most of an hour interviewing Mr. de Becker and some women who survived scary situations. http://www.oprah.com/

Anything that gets the topic of self-defense in front of a vulnerable audience is worthwhile, IMHO.

I'm not an Oprah fan much anymore either. I wish I would have known he was on; I would have attempted to record it.

That would have been worth watching Oprah for! I am currently reading his new book "Just 2 Seconds". A truely awsesome book! His book "The Gift of Fear" is excellent as well.

I've been in the LE / security fields for over 30 years, and found important and readily applicable material in both books. However, I don't agree with him on everything. In "The Gift of Fear," he discounts use of a firearm for self defense as a viable option. While he has a lot of worthwhile things to say about other tactics, he never addresses the situation where all other options have failed and the intended victim is facing an immediate and deadly threat.

You state the point well. Shooting is not the solution to every problem, but sometimes it is the only solution.

Mr. de Becker's useful role is to point out how to avoid those situations. Armed people have been blindsided because they lacked situational awareness.
