In the years 1910-1920, the Mexican Revolution led to a breakdown of law and order (such as they ever were) along the Rio Grande. Mexican bandits began to raid on the Texas side, often killing innocent people for no reason. Some of these bandits had, or claimed to have, the intention of reclaiming Texas for Mexico.
The governor of Texas, William Hobby, appointed many new Texas Rangers who were charged with restoring order. By many accounts, these men not only fought the Mexican bandits but executed reprisals against Texans of Mexican descent who were accused of complicity with the bandits. The number of people who died is unknown, and may be as high as 5,000.
