Are mandatory hurricane evacs really mandatory?

Can they make me leave? I live in Friendswood and have no place for my wife and daughter to go. I am in an area that doesn't normally flood (in Allison the water only came up to my sidewalk). I am forced to cover the hurricane ride out crew at work and cannot go with them. Unless Gustav is going to hit us direct, I would rather they stay here. The hotels are full for miles heading north and I would prefer that they not try and battle the traffic and the people trying to find a place, especially since my wife refuses to carry. Can they force them to evacuate?

They are not mandatory in the sense that the police will drag you out of your house. Supposedly, mandatory evacuations mean that emergency responders will not come to your aid if you stay. Knowing what I know about emergency responders, they probably would move mountains to help you anyway.

However, in the aftermath of a hurricane, with floods and roads blocked by downed trees and utility poles, you could be impossible to reach.

You're not far from Hobby in this period of calm, and hopping a flight to anywhere would be a way out. I know it's costly, but it's a sure thing at this time. Sites like Travelocity have very low last-minute fares to odd places.

You could call 211 and see what advice they can give you.

Rita made me decide that I would never evacuate for a similar storm again.

I stayed put during Carla, Alicia, and all of the minor blows along the way.

I was talked into going as far as Brenham to stay with my brother and had a nice visit for three days.

I avoided all traffic on the way to Brenham. Six cars at the intersection in Plantersville was the only congestion I found.

I got back to Baytown and found my power hadn't even been off the entire time.

Whatever happens, it will happen with me sitting in my house. If it gets bad enough, I can sit down against my Fort Knox!

Category 4 or 5 is still open for consideration.

I saw a story relating to a run on sporting goods stores. Seems the main commodity was ar-15s and cases of ammo. One would think La. , Nagin, et al would have learned their lesson after being keel hauled by the NRA through the courts. Plus, the Supreme court has officially changed the playing field some since Katrina.

There wouldn't be any talk until after the storm. In Texas we passed laws ensuring it is clear that the authoritys have no right to disarm us while in a state of emergency. Louisiana lost a suit that confiscating guns was illegal, Any attempt to do so again would likely result in the offender doing time in a federal court.

They ain't getting the guns this time.
