Re: Ike
I have not heard from him personally but a report on him & ElGato were that they were safe but away from their homes. Continue to pray for them & especially Mrs. ElGato.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Re: Ike
Sorry to be MIA - - things are great here! All we lost was one shingle and our fence - - PRAISE GOD! I know we were very lucky to have amazing friends and family to help us both during and after the storm! :-) We love you guys!!
Jason returned home on Sunday because he was needed at work. After leaving our "safe haven" in Conroe, Babybirds and I took a tour of Central Texas (Centerville, Corsicana, and finally Temple) where we visited with lots of different family members. After power, water, and sewage were restored we came home on Friday.
Thanks to everyone for your prayers and for checking up on us! I am still out of school until Thursday, but Jason has been crazy at work. If you guys know of anyone in this area who needs help please don't hesitate to give them our numbers or contact me with theirs. I would be glad to provide some hot meals, do laundry, etc... for anyone who is still without power.
Jim - - after they open the island to residents tomorrow will they let people come down to help? If so, I would be glad to bring you guys some dinner (hopefully it would taste better than the MRE's - but I make no promises
) and take some loads of laundry home with me. I would also be glad to bring any other supplies you guys need and cannot get. I think you have Jason's number - - just give him a call.

Re: Ike
At this point, they are saying that only property owners and residents (renters if not property owners) will be allowed onto the island.jbirdswife wrote:Jim - - after they open the island to residents tomorrow will they let people come down to help?
Law enforcement personnel are generally allowed through the checkpoint without further explanation.
We aren't really lacking for anything except electricity. Kroger, Academy, and Home Depot being open helps a lot. Stores are opening every day.

Re: Ike
I guess we're ok too...
Posting this on generator power...My boss loaned me one of his just this last Friday...
Lost power Friday night of the storm at 11:45pm...
Water came up in the street twice Saturday morning...We lost the tops of a lot of our trees...
Clean up has been a tiresome job, and I know we probably did better than most in the damage department...
We have had (per some of the local Law Enforcement who stopped by to chat at our house) at least 20+ burglaries/looting style crimes within 8 block of our residence...Not too happy about that stat...But we'll manage...
Lots of looky loos asking if we have power back in our area...I hate to not be friendly, but questions like that get answered with questions myself...While we are out here cleaning up debris...
After cleaning up our property, I went up and down Hall Rd. here and cut up the trees laying across the road, knowing it is a main response corridor for Emergency Services...
Thats about all we can do for now...
Maybe we'll get some relief with power restored in the next few days and get out of the sweatbox conditions we are in now...We are going on, what? 12 days now...Asof this posting, we are in a sea of lighted houses, on a dark island of old world stillness down our street...
Later...

Wife Unit came up with a great idea to get the linemen in to fix the nighborhoods power situation...
It involves a stage, music, beer and dancing girls...I bet we have 50 crews in our nieghborhood till it gets done with that plan...

Re: Ike
I have a good friend that is down there with our company. They have him literally working 7x24 manning generators and making sure they get the propane tanks refueled. They have been sleeping in their trucks, and have not had a day off since Ike. I was told yesterday they have extended the stay until December at least, and still don't expect them to have a day off. Hopefully they will get them in a motel and allow them some time off (even if not a full day) or we will have a bunch of dead linemen on our hands.stevie_d_64 wrote:My perches are all gone...DoubleJ wrote:Glad to hear you're still kickin'stevie_d_64 wrote:I guess we're ok too...![]()

I'm sure he'd like some time off but by working these amount of hours, plus all of his overtime, he can take a month off and head to Hawaii when this is all over. They have him literally working 7x24 manning generators and making sure they get the propane tanks refueled.

Oh yeah, he is crying all the way to the bank right now. Just hope his widow doesn't get to spend it.
He is young though and is capable of handling it mentally and physically. With me, I would be dead in about a week! LOL

I'm not sure they'd be paying much attention to the electric lines and transformers.stevie_d_64 wrote:Wife Unit came up with a great idea to get the linemen in to fix the nighborhoods power situation...

Re: Ike
We got power today in the livable forest.
My relatives in Orange County, even those that flooded, got power several days ago.
Dad, step-mom, grandmother & sister all have power and no damage. The in-laws are working on finding a contractor to repair their house. Mom & step-dad are fine in Orangefield, but have lined up a contractor to repair their rent house in Bridge City. (My mom told me that only 18 of the 3,600 houses in Bridge City missed the flood!)
A friend and I were talking a few days ago, and we can't remember hearing about a time when Bridge City flooded. Considering its proximity to the coast and Sabine Lake, as well as the fact that it's surrounded on three sides by a water source, many residents had been advised to purchase flood policies. However, it has avoided such disaster until Ike.

Re: Ike
We now have electricity and a high-speed Internet connection. Praise the Lord.
The land line telephones had been working, but they stopped today. The cell phones are now reliable, though.
The flood insurance adjuster came today. He seemed to be generously inclined. He was an independent adjuster who was not directly employed by the underwriter. He pointed out some damage that I had overlooked. For example, the type of door that has a wood core and metal cladding may seem alright at first; but according to him, it will swell in time and no longer close. Those doors cost several hundred dollars.
We still lack
Thanks again for your prayers and other offers of help. I think we will make it now.

We still lack
- drinkable city water
- gas
- mail delivery or pickup
- vehicles (though I bought a bicycle yesterday)
- public transportation
- medical care, other than urgent trauma care

Good to here you are starting down the road to normalcy. Even the restaurants are good news. As it makes it easier for contractors and such.seamusTX wrote:We now have electricity and a high-speed Internet connection. Praise the Lord.

We still lackBusinesses are opening little by little. Kroger, Target, and Home Depot are back. Some restaurants are open with limited menus. (I don't care too much about the restaurants, but they are a sign of the tourist industry returning to life.)

I heard from forum member 57Coastie, who used to live on Bolivar Peninsula. He is now with his son in College Station and is trying to rent an apartment there.
He has no idea what is going on with his home on Bolivar. Access there is restricted and information is very limited. He is getting the royal runaround from FEMA.
If you want to get a message to him, please e-mail me at seamusTX@comcast.net and I will relay it. He will not be visiting this forum in the foreseeable future, and I won't have much time myself.
