Same day classes(10 and 4 hour)

Post by Rusty »

I just received an e-mail about an instuctor having a regular 10 hour class (7AM-6PM),and having the renewals come in at 1 PM. I have been an instuctor since the beginning and all I can remember was that renewals and regular classes cannot be done together.Someone please enlighten me.I would love having the 10 hour and 4 hour classes together.

I done my course over 2 night, the renewals came in the second day for the shooting and rest of class. So yes you can mix the class!

My initial CHL class had a mix of first-timers and renewals, as well. One-day class.

Rusty - we have done it both ways. I specifically asked Marion a couple of years ago, and she said that, as long as the renewals get everything they need, then it is OK.

My only problem is the renewals tend to be there for longer than they are required when I combine the classes.

The upside is, sometimes the renewals bring a little more to the discussion and the new students benefit from their experiences.

When I took my initial class last year, the renewals were there first thing. We did all of our paperwork, and then went to the range for qualification. When we returned to the classroom, the initial licensees were released for a bit of an early lunch, and the renewals stayed. They were done by the time we got back.

I could have sworn that at one time during an instructor renewal class,we were told to not do regular and renewal classes at the same time.I have lost students in the past because of not being able to do 10 and 4 hour classes together,so I thought.I guess that i will get a little more coffee down before the next class.

Someone must have said this to instructors somewhere along the way, because you are not the only one I have heard this from. That is why I checked with DPS to make sure it was OK.

I've been in the instructor program since the inception in 1995 and certainly do not recall anything to the effect that the classes should not be combined.

I've done various formats over the years, including "renewal only" classes on weekday evenings. What generally works out well at our place is to have everyone come in at 8:00 then qualify the renewal students while the "original license" students are gone to lunch.

At my initial, both were there. I just finished my renewal and both were still there. In fact the renewals went to the range, fingerprints, and paperwork first. Gone by 1:00
