New York City gets the government it deserves.

Re: intriguing site, NYC stinks
After reading through that I find myself with less than perfect confidence in their abilities to do anything about "gun charges."
First of all, they keep mixing state law with city law as if the two are the same, and there are distinct differences. NY State law actually has a provision for traveling, albeit without stopping, which is not included in NY City law:
13. Possession of pistols and revolvers by a person who is a nonresident of this state while attending or traveling to or from, an organized competitive pistol match or league competition under auspices of, or approved by, the National Rifle Association and in which he is a competitor, within forty-eight hours of such event or by a person who is a non-resident of the state while attending or traveling to or from an organized match sanctioned by the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association and in which he is a competitor, within forty-eight hours of such event, provided that he has not been previously convicted of a felony or a crime which, if committed in New York, would constitute a felony, and further provided that the pistols or revolvers are transported unloaded in a locked opaque container together with a copy of the match program, match schedule or match registration card. Such documentation shall constitute prima facie evidence of exemption, providing that such person also has in his possession a pistol license or firearms registration card issued in accordance with the laws of his place of residence. For purposes of this subdivision, a person licensed in a jurisdiction which does not authorize such license by a person who has been previously convicted of a felony shall be presumed to have no prior conviction. The superintendent of state police shall annually review the laws of jurisdictions within the United States and Canada with respect to the applicable requirements for licensing or registration of firearms and shall publish a list of those jurisdictions which prohibit possession of a firearm by a person previously convicted of a felony or crimes which if committed in New York state would constitute a felony.
NY City gets its own exemption from NY State laws:
13-a. Except in cities not wholly contained within a single county of the state, possession of pistols and revolvers by a person who is a nonresident of this state while attending or traveling to or from, an organized convention or exhibition for the display of or education about firearms, which is conducted under auspices of, or approved by, the National Rifle Association and in which he is a registered participant, within forty-eight hours of such event,
NY City is not wholly contained within a single county.
Of course one either has to be on the way to or from a match or gun show, not just traveliing to grandma's house in VT for some, legal there, hunting and target shooting.
And of course one also has to have the requisite paperwork, which doesn't exist in TX.
And the ad also doesn't mention the Federal law that is supposed to protect travelers.

I got the impression that they are just trying to point out how unlikely it is to successfully defend yourself against the NYC or NY State gun laws if you are caught innocuously with a gun either in your car or on your person that would be perfectly legal in almost every other state in the Union.
I just got back from there. My wife wants to go back. I was diligently searching for a way to legally carry a gun in NYC before going back for a return visit. Tough luck.

Wouldn't all of this be irrelevant if the person was traveling through the state of New York? Doesn't federal law protect us when traveling through states?

Yes FOPA seems to protect you traveling from one legal location (state) to another. However NYC is hardly en-route.
Still if my wife wants me to go back and stay a couple of days in NYC, then that is not covered by FOPA.

It's easy to do that. All you have to do is get wealthy and connected.mr.72 wrote:....I was diligently searching for a way to legally carry a gun in NYC before going back for a return visit. Tough luck.
