Yeah, delivering pizza is a lousy job at best. Some of these robbers shoot or beat the driver, apparently just out of sheer malice.

There was a robbery in this county several years ago where the idiot robbers called the pizza driver to their own apartment.

No, but it made the job of the police easy.

Back in my college days I delivered pizza in both Keller and then up in Denton (and the surrounding area)...never had any issues (maybe it was my size/demeanor? I don't know), other than some drunk customers, but they seemed to tip the best...they were sooooooo glad to be able to get a pie delivered, even had some try to empty out their wallets as a tip...they thought it was better than a DWI. One of my co-workers did have a long-time customer/drunkard/wierdo pull a gun on him...but he just laughed it off...crazy. We didn't have signs on our cars - but yeah, we carried cash - although on outbound runs we'd try to keep it to $20 (in singles/fives and some quarters) for giving change. After a run we'd deposit it into a secure area for each driver so we could keep tabs on how much we had in tips. I had a nice Spyderco or similar knife in my right pocket...you know, Texas and pocket knifes go hand-in-hand. It was a cool job, cash every night, out and about...people were always glad to see you.

Delivering pizzas got me through college. It was easy money and fun too.
It's not that dangerous if you use your head. Setups were easy to sniff out. Bogus phone numbers, un-kept grass, or a dark house were dead giveaways. Only once did I screw up and park in the driveway of a vacant house. Someone drove up and blocked me in the driveway and yelled something to extent of, "drop the pizzas and we won't kick your butt." I just jumped in my truck and drove through the front yard. When I got back to the store, no one had called to complain about a driver rotor-tilling their yard. I think I just got there before they were ready.

Drunks tipped better and some tipped beer. :cheers2:
I even got to: witness a store robbery/break-in, call the cops with a description, and later Id them after they were caught.
Good times.

Would I deliver pizzas in today's world, yes.
Would I pack heat, you bet...regardless of company policy.
I was young and bullet-proof back then...now i'm just young ;-)

Well, I really don't think I would want to deliver pizza in this day and age. However, if you do, I think I would get a bigger pistol than a .22 caliber Derringer, now that's scary!

I wonder if this pizza place has a policy on the carry of weapons?

Papa John's does have a no-weapons policy; but I can't find any information about whether this guy has been fired.

I hope not... that is ridiculous that they can't protect themselves, especially how vulnerable they are. I have heard of other pizza delivery guys getting fired over protecting themselves, however.

Anybody happen to have copies of the major pizza chains' weapon policies? It might be useless, but at least satisfying, to mail back all their little flyers with copies of the policies and a letter explaining that I will not do business with anyone that doesn't trust their own employees to defend themselves.

I found some online yesterday. No-weapons policies for delivery services is a hot topic.

I wonder how they can actually enforce this policy since you are typically doing deliveries in your own vehicle. I can't think of a single reason for them to have an issue with legally carrying a weapon in your own car.

Companies can make any rules they want for employees, unless they touch upon issues of race, sex, disability, religion, and a few other matters. They can make you wear a uniform or follow a dress code, for example. They can prohibit smoking outside of work hours.

(The company that I work for has a no-weapons policy that includes company-sponsored events, no matter where they are held.)

I remember when Weyerhauser in Oklahoma fired a bunch of employees who had firearms in their vehicles in the parking lot. The employees' union tried to get them reinstated and failed.

I heard one pizza-company executive state reasons for their no-weapons policy. They included avoiding liability if the employee shot someone, and the theory that people would be afraid to order pizza if they knew the driver might be armed.

I think that's nonsense, but it's the kind of thinking that corporate executives engage in.

Mars delivered pizza when he was in college, and part of his zone was the ghetto. Eventually, management in both stores quit allowing deliveries to be made to the higher crime areas after a certain time of night. He drove off from one delivery when he happened to see a "customer" walking toward him from the shadows trying to hide his pistol.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.
