Where's the cars at?? 56K Beware!!

Post by Bunkins »

This place is full of great stuff.. Gun's, intelligent friendly people, a few jokers. Hunting stories and pictures.... For me though, there is something missing, hotrods, 4X4's, buggies, ATV's, dirtbike's!! If it has a engine, post it up!

I'm a drag racing nut, started racing when I was 16. I had some down time, about 5-6 yrs of downtime while I decided how far I wanted to take the car. I'm only 2 yrs into it, about $20K from getting it close to where I want it, and probably a lifetime worth of work until I'm completely happy with it.. It's a 79 Mustang, used to be a little 'ol 4 cyl turbo car, then it went to a 302, now it's a turbo 302, in the final stages of the build it will be a turbo 351W car.. Though it will never be a full out drag car, that wont take away the fact that it wont be able to put a smack down on many of the full out race cars... It's been in the family since it was new, and if I have anything to say about it, it will always be in the family ( although it may end up 6ft under, right along with me  )..

She's ugly now, but paint and body work will be one of the last things I do. In the case of this car, it doesnt have to be pretty to be fast  I wont post up any build pics, that would be a entire thread in itself ( and it has 3 of them plastered on other forum's ).. Just some pics showing how it sits right now, and a few old ones..

Extra points if anyone can tell me what this is... Not something you see everyday under a old car...

Image

Fastest the car has been to date is a 12.41 @ 113 MPH in the 1/4.. No full runs with the turbo setup yet because it's not tuned, but a very mild easy run down the track, coasting the last 1/8th mile it ran a 13.1 @ 89 MPH.. It's nasty, pulls HARD, I always hate to guess, but I'm confident next yr after a few shake down runs she'll be in the low 11's.. In the end, I want low 10's. Keep in mind this car will be driven on the street, though nobody will ever see me play with it on the street, I'm not into that. I have some vids if anyone is interested in seeing them..

I like my trucks too, gotta post those up.... They might show license plate numbers, but o-well, I flash it to the world every time I drive down the road, so really it doesnt matter....

My 97 Dodge Ram, it's modified as well. Within the next few yrs I'd like to go turbo with it too.. First pic is the most resent.

When was the last time ya seen a 1/2 ton tow somethin like that? Has 170K on the ticker, and it's done that kind of towing all it's life. But like I said, it's not stock. Has a heavier suspension than my '00 F-250 does.. The only clutch I have found that wont slip is a 1500 dollar dual disk clutch. Stout truck, and it will always have a home with me.. I've had it since I was 18, not my first truck, but by far has been the best...

Finally, my '00 Ford F-250 PSD.. My tow rig.. I have no resent pics of it, but I've done some cosmetic stuff to it, Ford towing mirrors, 3 inch lift and a few other goodies.. It's got 4 inch Magnaflow Exhaust, Edge Evolution programer, and a ton of tweaks ya dont buy from a store, or read in the book ;-) She's no weenie, runs a 14.9 in the 1/4, with a slipping torque converter. Tows whatever you put behind it. 220K on the ticker, and still going strong. Had it since it was new, to fond of it to trade her in..

Image

I've got one more truck, but no pics yet.. A '07 F-450.. She's a BIG girl.. Also have a '99 Cobra sitting under a car cover beside the '79 in the shop. Bought it with the motor in pieces, not sure when I'll get around to building it. It will go back together stock though, only 200 made in White, so it needs to stay stock.. No pics of the other toys, I've posted enough pics.. Needless to say, I like my vehicles  And not a single one is on cinder blocks, nor will they ever be..

So I posted mine, lets see whats sitting in your garage, driveway, or something you've had in the past.. Even if it's just a friends and ya "supervise" the work while holding on to a beer on the weekends, post it up!

Right now I have neither the time, nor the money.

But one day...

I've always had a thing for the 72 Ford Mach 1 Mustang:

At least, the look of the exterior. The original engine left a lot to be desired, as did the interior.

I've always wanted one of these. I always wanted to do, what classic cars afficianidos like my father in law call it, "ruin it" by putting a better engine in it, and redoing the interior.

One day, I will.

Until then, I am stuck with an Infiniti I35 that I'm severely upside down on, back from when I was doing Sales... Thats a whole nother story.

Funny, my "one day" car is also a Mustang. Specifically, a 1969 Mach I 428 Cobrajet. Something about like this:

1995 Ford SVT Lightning. I am the original owner and purchased her new from Helfman Ford in Stafford, where I worked in 1995. She has about 60k on the odometer now.

The 69 Mach 1 is probably my favorite too.. Problem is they only come in 2 flavors, very expensive, or so far beyond repair that you will have a fortune bringing it back to life..

Thats what stinks about making car's a hobby, or anything with a engine basicly.. It's so expensive that most people cant afford it, I struggle myself.. I look at gun prices, gun parts and ammo, and laugh.. It all seems so cheap to me.. Thats not saying I have a lot of money, I dont, it's just that I'm so used to saving for months and months and months just to get one part.. Where as in 2-3 months time I could have enough saved up to buy a new gun.. The tranny I'm looking at for my car right now costs 4K, then you still need a shatter proof bell housing, clutch, shifter, your looking at 6-7K for a assembly that does 1 thing.. It's insane, but it's very much an addiction, much like gun's can be to some people.. I'm looking at spending 10K this winter just to upgrade parts to handle the new found power ( turbo setup ), but the way things are going right now I'm not going to do it, not a smart "investment" to say the least..

Here's a few links to some vids.. I have some new ones of the car with the turbo setup that I need to get cut and edited, I have a few while at the track with the new turbo setup, but it's very uneventful.. I'll try and get it done tonight and post up..

The links I'm posting are vids of the car while on nitrous and bone stock 302 ( has no street miles, all track ). I have no vids of full runs, I didnt buy a camera until late this yr, and by that time I was having serious issues with fuel and ignition. As you'll be able to see in the vids while at the local track... The nitrous backfire while at the track took out the head gaskets, and the intake manifold gaskets, dumping 2 gallons of water in the crankcase.. Blew all the intake tubing off as well.. Found that the fuel pump was going bad ( 400 dollar pump, only 5 months old with maybe 30 minutes run time, no warranty since it's a race application ), and if I run my fuel tank below 7/8's of a tank, the fuel rides up the back of the tank, starving the fuel pump.. Expensive way to find the weak links, gaskets and head studs cost me 600 bucks

Just some shake down runs at the house, I dont do that very often at all. Camera guy sucks

The last vid, my dad's 98 GT is in the right lane.. It's supercharged, still needs a ton of work though, runs 15's, but thats with a Viper Spec 6 speed and 2:73 gears, with that gear combo, it runs 900 RPM down the highway at 80 MPH  I run a 5 speed with 3:55 gears and 27 inch tall slicks, at the end of the 1/4 I'm running 5600 RPM in 4th gear, he's in 3rd running 4000 RPM

I had no idea there were others that shared the Mach 1 disease I have. I feel somewhat better.

My grandfather has a 69 Mach one sitting in the garage right now. It hasn't been started in years, but when i drove it the one and only time it ran strong. Needs cosmetic work to be complete but it is sweet!!!!!!!!! :clapping:

I have two play toys.

First is my 2008 Honda XR650L. It has a FMF jetting kit, a UNI air filter, and a Big Gun exhaust (very loud).

Image

My 1984 Toyota FJ-60 Landcruiser. Tough as a tank with mostly factory equipment. Soon it will be lifted, the straight 6 motor worked over, a 5-speed tranny put in, rebuilt axles, front and rear bumpers, roof rack... well you get the idea. Bought last week! :anamatedbanana

Image

I just bought this is the last week!

It's a 2007 Ford F-150 and it is my daily driver. Nothing special and the only thing I'm doing to it is a bed liner, bed cover, and tinting the front windows.
