Encouragement for the new year...

Whether the need is great or small, there is power in prayer, especially when God's people raise their voices together.

Encouragement for the new year...

Post by The Annoyed Man »

I just wanted to offer this encouragement to my brothers and sisters in Christ going into 2009. Every morning, my wife and I start the day together with a devotional, scripture reading, and prayer. We use Oswald Chambers' excellent book, My Utmost for His Highest for the daily devotional. Each day's entry prompts us to dig into the scriptures and it enrichens each day so much - not to mention what it does for the strength of our marriage.

Anyway, this morning's entry was based on Isaiah 52:12, which in context, reads thusly:
7 How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings,
who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
"Your God reigns!"

8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;
together they shout for joy.
When the LORD returns to Zion,
they will see it with their own eyes.

9 Burst into songs of joy together,
you ruins of Jerusalem,
for the LORD has comforted his people,
he has redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The LORD will lay bare his holy arm
in the sight of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth will see
the salvation of our God.

11 Depart, depart, go out from there!
Touch no unclean thing!
Come out from it and be pure,
you who carry the vessels of the LORD.

12 But you will not leave in haste
or go in flight;
for the LORD will go before you,
the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

(NIV)
Here is what Chambers says about that:
Security from Yesterday. ". . . God requires an account of what is past" (Ecclesiastes 3:15). At the end of the year we turn with eagerness to all that God has for the future, and yet anxiety is apt to arise when we remember our yesterdays. Our present enjoyment of God's grace tends to be lessened by the memory of yesterday's sins and blunders. But God is the God of our yesterdays, and He allows the memory of them to turn the past into a ministry of spiritual growth for our future. God reminds us of the past to protect us from a very shallow security in the present.

Security for Tomorrow. ". . . the Lord will go before you . . . ." This is a gracious revelation - that God will send His forces out where we have failed to do so. He will keep watch so that we will not be tripped up again by the same failures, as would undoubtedly happen if He were not our "rear guard." And God's hand reaches back to the past, settling all the claims against our conscience.

Security for Today. "You shall not go out with haste in the haste of impetuous, forgetful delight, nor with the quickness of impulsive thoughtlessness. But let us go out with the patient power of knowing that the God of Israel will go before us. Our yesterdays hold broken and irreversible things for us. It is true that we have lost opportunities that will never return, but God can transform this destructive anxiety into a constructive thoughtfulness for the future. Let the past rest, but let it rest in the sweet embrace of Christ.

Leave the broken, irreversible past in His hands, and step out into the invincible future with him.
I read those words this morning, and I cried. This has been a very hard couple of years for my little family. We have suffered dislocation, separation from family, loss of loved ones, loss of employment, and loss of security in temporal things. But one thing we have learned to lean into with all of our strength is the security of knowing our loving God.

I pray that you all have a great 2009, and that you will each lean into our Savior Jesus Christ, taking comfort that He is in control, and we don't have to be.

God bless you all.

Chris

You're welcome, both of you. I enjoy each of those daily devotionals, but todays seemed particularly apt and touched me in a special way.
