1639 - The Fundamental Orders were adopted in the Connecticut River towns of Windsor, Hartford and Wethersfield. This document is recognized as the first written constitution in North America, and one of the first anywhere.

1784 - The United States Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris with the United Kingdom, formally ending the Revolutionary War nearly 10 years after it began.

1952 - NBC's Today Show premiered. It is the third-oldest running TV show in history, behind the CBS Evening News and Meet the Press.

1963 - George Wallace was sworn in as the Governor of Alabama. His inaugural address contaiined the famous or infamous phrase "segregation today ... segregation tomorrow ... segregation forever."

It seems history was not on his side on this issue.

1969 - A rocket exploded on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, killing 27 sailors and injuring 314.
