1913 - The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, allowing the federal income tax to be created.
1950 - "Your Show of Shows" was broadcast for the first time, on NBC.
At a time when there were few TVs and little to see on them, this show was a model for all the variety shows that came after it. It ran until 1954, and few recordings of it exist.
1964 - Cassius Clay defeated Sonny Liston to become the world heavyweight boxing champion. Clay later converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
