1870 - Hiram R. Revels, a Republican from Mississippi, became the first black member of the United States Senate. He was also one the first Senators from Mississippi after the end of the War Between the States.

1913 - The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, allowing the federal income tax to be created.
1950 - "Your Show of Shows" was broadcast for the first time, on NBC.
At a time when there were few TVs and little to see on them, this show was a model for all the variety shows that came after it. It ran until 1954, and few recordings of it exist.
1964 - Cassius Clay defeated Sonny Liston to become the world heavyweight boxing champion. Clay later converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
