Not computers, but police scanners...
Not computers, but police scanners...
Any scanner listeners in the Montgomery County area?
Did Montgomery County Sheriff's Office switch over to a digital radio system or are they still on a trunked system? Or maybe my scanner's messed up?
My scanner has had ZERO activity on the MCSO dispatch channels for weeks now. Funny thing is I can still hear activity on the OPS channels.

What I found here:
http://www.montgomerycountymonitor.com/ ... x.php?id=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Welcome to the Montgomery County Monitor Live Scanner Feed page.
Montgomery County law enforcement, except for Conroe PD, switched to a new digital radio system as of January 21, 2009.
We currently do not have a digital feed for the new law enforcement system.
We are monitoring the new digital system in order to determine the feasibility of providing a live feed of the new digital system.
This maneuver wipes out law enforcement feed #1 and leaves only Conroe PD on law enforcement feed #2.
Hopefully in the future circumstances will warrant the return of law enforcement feed #1. Please take note of the feed changes below.
We appreciate those who have pasted the scanner feed links at other sites. For those that wish to continue to post the links please post this link (http://www.montgomerycountymonitor.co" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... es/content/index.php?id=3) instead of the direct link to the individual feeds. Thanks
Hope that helps.

Ah-ha, that would explain it.
Looks like JLaw will be listening to EMS and FD, along with hams and local airports until I can save up $500.00 for a digital scanner!

Re: Not computers, but police scanners...
what is the purpose of scanning police? I've always wondered this and I am not sure what the fascination is. I used to know some websites back in the day that would broadcast them over the net in different countries over the world.

It's like watching COPS but without the commercials and editing.iamomeed wrote:what is the purpose of scanning police? I've always wondered this and I am not sure what the fascination is. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If it's on the internet, thank a geek.

most people listen to scanners so they can satisfy their curiosity. I own a portable scanner and have it programmed for when our weather gets bad. I also use it as an extra AA battery charger.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

I was a volunteer fireman, a NYS State Park Patrolman, a reserve policeman, and am a Ham radio operator, I have four or five scanners and several other radios that will scan, and have had scanners continuously since they first became available. I bought the first one to keep track of fire department activity in my town and can't imagine not having one on now.iamomeed wrote:what is the purpose of scanning police? I do enjoy knowing what the sirens are about, and when we lived in IL I actually arrived at my neighbors' house long before the FD and had the fire pretty close to out and was treating my neighbor's burns by the time they arrived. I was suitably embarrassed to note that I had run out of my house without ANY of the several fire extinguishers I always keep handy. I have also avoided traffic jams with one in the car.
Call it some sort of voyeurism by ear or something, but I enjoy it.
I also like to take my dog, my lawn chair, and a portable scanner out when the local police are doing radar off the bridge over the highway, and sit there and wave and cheer and stuff. Of course I'm nowhere near where the stops take place, and can't be seen by the drivers that are going to be stopped until after they have been officially clocked, and a couple of the local cops have told me they get a kick out of it.

Well, a lot of it around here is knowing what the paper feels isn't newsworthy. It's quite amusing how they'll run a half-page on some little old lady having a fender bender, but someone important can total their car while DUI and it doesn't even get mentioned on a slow news day.iamomeed wrote:what is the purpose of scanning police?
